Respond to immediate alarms

The `get_active_alerts` tool pulls currently active environmental warnings and major alerts. You can filter the results by severity—Critical, Major, etc.—so your agent knows exactly where to focus its response efforts. Once an alarm is identified, use `acknowledge_alert` with both the necessary alert ID and the operator's user ID. This action formally moves the alarm into history, which is key for proper shift handovers and auditing.

Monitor real-time sensor data

Want to check a specific reading? `get_sensor_reading` provides the current value for any critical asset, like server rack temperature or UPS room humidity. This is precise monitoring that lets your agent make immediate, fact-based decisions. Need to know what sensors are available across campus? Start by running `get_sensors`. This tool lists all environmental monitoring points, and you can narrow the scope further by supplying a specific site ID.

Audit system limits and usage

Before trusting any sensor reading, your agent should check the safety margins. `get_thresholds` lets it view current alarm limits for specific sensors. This helps ensure the established boundaries still match operational requirements. If you need to change those limits (say, due to seasonal changes), run `update_threshold`. It modifies the necessary alarm thresholds and ensures the system triggers a new alarm if readings cross these modified boundaries.

Setup guide

Set up Vertiv Environet MCP in OpenAI Agents SDK

Prerequisites

  • Python 3.10+ installed
  • openai-agents package (pip install openai-agents)
  • Active Vinkius subscription with a valid endpoint token
  1. 1

    Install the SDK

    Run pip install openai-agents to install the OpenAI Agents SDK. The MCP integration is built-in — no extra dependencies needed.

  2. 2

    Connect via SSE transport

    Use MCPServerSse with your Vinkius endpoint URL. Replace [YOUR_TOKEN_HERE] with your token from cloud.vinkius.com. The SDK auto-discovers all Vertiv Environet tools at runtime.

  3. 3

    Create your Agent

    Pass the MCP to Agent(mcp_servers=[server]). The agent receives Vertiv Environet tools as native definitions — JSON schemas resolve automatically.

  4. 4

    Run the agent

    Call Runner.run(agent, prompt) to execute. The agent invokes the appropriate Vertiv Environet tools and returns structured results. Copy the full example on the right to get started.

agent.py
import asyncio
from agents import Agent, Runner
from agents.mcp import MCPServerSse

async def main():
    async with MCPServerSse(
        url="https://edge.vinkius.com/[YOUR_TOKEN_HERE]/mcp"
    ) as server:
        agent = Agent(
            name="Vertiv Environet Agent",
            instructions="You have access to Vertiv Environet tools.",
            mcp_servers=[server],
        )
        result = await Runner.run(agent, "List recent transactions")
        print(result.final_output)

asyncio.run(main())

Common questions about Vertiv Environet MCP in OpenAI Agents SDK

It exposes specialized tools that let your agent interact directly with environmental controls. You just call the tool, and the underlying system handles the connection to the monitoring platform.
Yep. Use `get_alert_history`. This tool lets you view historical alarm records, which is perfect for root cause analysis or figuring out if a particular environmental issue keeps recurring.
The server handles sensor readings and user activity logs. Specifically, you can access `user_activity` which records the type of data being monitored: user actions.
Run the `get_sites` tool. This quickly lists every single facility ID that's monitored by the Environet system, allowing your agent to scope its subsequent searches.
The server accesses and logs user activity. This means it handles `user_activity` data, which records who did what within the system for auditing purposes.
