LangChain: Advanced MCP Server Chaining

The `search_recordings` tool lets you find bird sound data on Xeno-canto. You can chain this search with other steps—maybe calling a database to filter by geography or sending the results to another API for analysis. This is perfect when your agent needs to perform complex reasoning. For instance, the output of the recording search becomes the input for determining which type of data structure you need next.

MCP Server: Multi-step Data Retrieval

You don't just run a single query; you build a whole workflow. The `search_recordings` tool finds specific bird sound recordings from the Xeno-canto database, and then your chain uses that list of results to decide on its next action. This means your agent can automatically pivot based on what it finds. It's not just searching; it's reasoning through a series of data calls.

LangChain: Integrating Acoustic Data Sources

Using the `search_recordings` tool, your agent gets direct access to Xeno-canto’s vast library of bird sounds. You can then pass the metadata—like species name and location—into subsequent steps in the chain. This capability makes building multi-server pipelines much easier. The output from finding recordings is treated just like any other piece of data your agent needs to move forward.

Setup guide

Set up Xeno-canto MCP in LangChain

Prerequisites

  • Python 3.10+ installed
  • langchain-mcp-adapters + langgraph packages
  • Active Vinkius subscription with a valid endpoint token
  1. 1

    Install dependencies

    Run pip install langchain-mcp-adapters langgraph langchain-openai. The MCP adapters package converts MCP tools into native LangChain BaseTool objects.

  2. 2

    Connect via HTTP transport

    Use MultiServerMCPClient with "transport": "http" pointing to your Vinkius endpoint. Replace [YOUR_TOKEN_HERE] with your token from cloud.vinkius.com.

  3. 3

    Create a ReAct agent

    Pass the discovered tools to create_react_agent() from LangGraph. The agent automatically routes Xeno-canto tool calls through the MCP protocol.

  4. 4

    Run with any LLM

    Swap ChatOpenAI for ChatAnthropic, ChatGoogleGenerativeAI, or any LangChain-compatible model. The MCP tools work identically across all providers.

agent.py
from langchain_mcp_adapters.client import MultiServerMCPClient
from langgraph.prebuilt import create_react_agent
from langchain_openai import ChatOpenAI

async with MultiServerMCPClient({
    "xeno-canto-mcp": {
        "transport": "http",
        "url": "https://edge.vinkius.com/[YOUR_TOKEN_HERE]/mcp",
    }
}) as client:
    tools = client.get_tools()

    agent = create_react_agent(
        ChatOpenAI(model="gpt-4o"),
        tools,
    )
    result = await agent.ainvoke({
        "messages": "List recent Xeno-canto transactions"
    })
    print(result["messages"][-1].content)

Common questions about Xeno-canto MCP in LangChain

You call the `search_recordings` tool. You'll pass parameters like a genus, country, or species name directly to the tool’s input arguments. The agent then returns a list of relevant recording metadata.
Yep. Because you're building chains, you can use the initial search results to generate new filtering criteria for subsequent tool calls or data processing steps within your workflow.
You treat the MCP Server as just another step. Your chain can take the results from `search_recordings`—for example, a list of species IDs—and pass them directly into a different integration you're running.
LangSmith tracing lets you observe everything. You see the latency and token count for every call, including each time `search_recordings` executes within your chain.
This server handles metadata about acoustic recordings, specifically details like the species genus, country of origin, and recording identifiers. It doesn't handle personal user information.
