Key Capabilities

Debate air quality findings

Deploy multiple agents to evaluate readings from `get_pm25_sensors`. One agent can analyze the data while another challenges the findings based on historical trends. This debate process ensures you aren't relying on a single sensor's potentially noisy output. The agents must reach a consensus before providing you with a final report.

Automate sensor network monitoring

Assign an agent to periodically poll `list_sensors` and flag anomalies. If the agent detects a change, it can trigger another agent to run `get_sensor_data` for a detailed check. This creates a self-correcting system. Your agents handle the routine monitoring work while you focus on the results of their internal deliberations.

Negotiate data-driven actions

Build a team where a security agent reviews the source of `get_sensors_near_me` results before a performance agent processes them. They negotiate the reliability of the data sources. This prevents your system from acting on uncalibrated or unreliable sensor readings. It is a robust way to handle multi-agent decision-making in real-world environments.

Setup guide

Set up PurpleAir MCP in AutoGen

Prerequisites

  • Python 3.10+ installed
  • autogen-ext[mcp] package
  • Active Vinkius subscription with a valid endpoint token
  1. 1

    Install AutoGen with MCP

    Run pip install "autogen-ext[mcp]" autogen-agentchat. The MCP extension includes mcp_server_tools for stateless tool access.

  2. 2

    Fetch tools from the MCP

    Call mcp_server_tools(SseServerParams(url=...)) with your Vinkius endpoint. Replace [YOUR_TOKEN_HERE] with your token from cloud.vinkius.com.

  3. 3

    Run your agent

    Pass the tools to AssistantAgent and call agent.run(). The agent invokes PurpleAir tools and returns structured results.

agent.py
from autogen_ext.tools.mcp import SseServerParams, mcp_server_tools
from autogen_agentchat.agents import AssistantAgent
from autogen_ext.models.openai import OpenAIChatCompletionClient

server_params = SseServerParams(
    url="https://edge.vinkius.com/[YOUR_TOKEN_HERE]/mcp"
)

tools = await mcp_server_tools(server_params)

agent = AssistantAgent(
    name="PurpleAir_assistant",
    model_client=OpenAIChatCompletionClient(model="gpt-4o"),
    tools=tools,
)

result = await agent.run("List recent PurpleAir data")
print(result.messages[-1].content)

Common questions about PurpleAir MCP in AutoGen

Use the mcp_server_tools function to define the server connection and pass the resulting tool list to your AssistantAgent. The McpToolAdapter will handle the schema translation for you.
They can. By giving multiple agents access to the same toolset, they can compare results from different sensors and debate the accuracy of the readings.
Yes. It works with both stdio and HTTP transports, allowing your agents to communicate with the server regardless of how you structure your multi-agent conversation.
The adapter automatically provides the tool schemas to your agents. This allows them to correctly select `get_sensor_data` or `get_sensors_near_me` during their conversation.
The connection is established through an ephemeral sandbox. No sensitive user data is stored, and the server only interacts with public sensor information and atmospheric metrics.
