VS Code Copilot MCP Server for Team Tasks

Managing engineering workloads happens directly in the editor your entire team uses. Copilot executes `list_todos` to pull pending bug reports and feature requests from your specific to-do list. Checking off a completed pull request prompts the agent to run `complete_todo`, updating the status for everyone instantly. Mistakes happen during rapid development cycles. Reopening a closed issue requires a quick prompt to trigger `uncomplete_todo`, putting the task back in the active queue. Creating net-new tickets for discovered tech debt involves `create_todo`, where the agent assigns the right numeric IDs and sets a strict YYYY-MM-DD deadline.

Sync Project Workspaces and Docks

Onboarding new developers requires access to the right project context. You can ask Copilot to map out the current active workspaces, and it fires `list_projects` to return names, descriptions, and purpose statements. Finding the exact tools enabled for a team involves calling `get_project` to read the dock configuration. Spinning up a new initiative takes seconds. The agent runs `create_project` to build a fresh workspace with default message boards and schedules enabled. Modifying that workspace later triggers `update_project` to change the name or description as the project scope shifts.

Read Messages and Identify Assignees

Tracking down the right person for a code review means looking up team roles. Copilot calls `list_project_people` to pull names and emails of everyone assigned to a specific workspace. Verifying your own authentication status or current operator details happens by running `get_my_profile`. Reviewing architectural decisions requires reading past discussions. Your agent executes `list_messages` using the board ID to find relevant threads, then calls `get_message` to extract the full historical context. Replying to those threads with code snippets triggers `create_comment` to push HTML-formatted text straight to the recording.

Setup guide

Set up Basecamp MCP in VS Code Copilot

Prerequisites

  • VS Code 1.99 or later with GitHub Copilot extension
  • Active Vinkius subscription with a valid endpoint token
  1. 1

    Open MCP configuration

Open the Command Palette (Cmd+Shift+P / Ctrl+Shift+P) and run "MCP: Add Server". Select HTTP (Streamable) as the server type. VS Code will create .vscode/mcp.json in your workspace.

  2. 2

    Add the Basecamp MCP

Paste the JSON snippet shown on the right into your .vscode/mcp.json. Replace [YOUR_TOKEN_HERE] with your endpoint token from cloud.vinkius.com.

  3. 3

    Switch to Agent mode

Open Copilot Chat (Cmd+Shift+I / Ctrl+Shift+I) and switch to Agent mode using the dropdown. MCP tools are only available in Agent mode — they do not appear in Edit or Ask modes.

  4. 4

    Verify the connection

In the Copilot Chat input, type # to list available tools. You should see the Basecamp tools listed. Try asking: "List my recent Basecamp transactions" and Copilot will invoke them automatically.

Common questions about Basecamp MCP in VS Code Copilot

Create a .vscode/mcp.json file in your project root and commit it to your repository. Every developer pulling that repo automatically gets access to the server tools in their Copilot Chat.
Yes, the agent executes `get_person` to look up details about a specific assignee. It can also run `list_people` to retrieve all users across the entire account.
Your agent calls `update_todo` to modify the title, description, or due date. This action only changes the content fields and does not alter whether the item is marked complete.
The server tools do not directly archive workspaces. You can use `list_projects` to filter by archived or trashed status, but modifying the status requires using the native web application.
Vinkius routes your requests through a stateless V8 Isolate Sandbox. Your internal project descriptions, code review comments, and to-do lists are processed in memory and immediately destroyed once the tool returns its payload.
