Automate segment curation via the Common Room MCP Server

Cascade handles the tedious work of sorting your community members. Instead of clicking through a web UI, you tell Windsurf to group active users, and it runs a chain of tools to get it done. The agent runs `list_segments` to find the right bucket, checks who belongs there with `list_segment_members`, and updates records instantly. If a contact needs to be moved, Cascade triggers `add_contact_to_segment` without needing you to prompt every single step. It reads your local files, identifies the target users, and runs the updates in the background. You just watch the final state update in your terminal panel.

Deep contact and organization lookups

Stop bouncing back and forth between your editor and your browser to check who just opened an issue. Your Windsurf agent uses `get_contact_by_email` to pull up a user's profile directly alongside your workspace code. It grabs their company name and immediately feeds it into `get_organization_details` to give you full context. This means you write personalized outreach or debug issues with full knowledge of who you are talking to. By querying `get_contact_tags`, Cascade knows if they are a paying customer, a community leader, or a cold prospect before you write a single line of email copy.

Search contacts and activities instantly

Finding specific community members gets simple when your editor can query your database. Windsurf uses `search_contacts` and `search_organizations` to match names, emails, or company handles against your live directory. It skips the slow API testing tools and gets raw data directly into your active workspace context. The agent can also check `list_activity_types` to see what actions these users are taking. It maps these activities back to your local files, letting you build custom dashboards or run local scripts with real-time community metrics.

Setup guide

Set up Common Room MCP in Windsurf

Prerequisites

  • Windsurf IDE installed (macOS, Windows, or Linux)
  • Active Vinkius subscription with a valid endpoint token
  1. 1

    Open MCP configuration

Click the Cascade assistant icon in the sidebar, then click the hammer icon (🔨) at the top of the panel. Select "Configure" to open ~/.codeium/windsurf/mcp_config.json.

  2. 2

    Add the Common Room MCP

Paste the JSON snippet shown on the right into the mcpServers object. Replace [YOUR_TOKEN_HERE] with your endpoint token from cloud.vinkius.com.

  3. 3

    Refresh MCPs

Go back to the hammer icon (🔨) in Cascade and click "Refresh". Windsurf will detect the new server. No full restart is needed — the connection is hot-reloaded.

  4. 4

    Verify in Cascade

Start a new Cascade conversation and ask something like "Show my Common Room payment history." If connected, Cascade will call the Common Room tools directly. You will see a green dot next to the server name in the MCP panel.

Common questions about Common Room MCP in Windsurf

Open your settings in Windsurf and navigate to the Cascade MCP configuration. Add the server URL under your mcpServers block, or use the built-in marketplace for a quick installation. Once added, Cascade automatically discovers all ten tools.
Yes, that is the main strength of Cascade inside Windsurf. If you ask it to find a user and add them to a group, it will automatically chain `get_contact_by_email` and `add_contact_to_segment` without waiting for your permission between steps.
Not at all. The MCP server runs as a lightweight process that only activates when Cascade calls a tool like `get_segment_status`. Your local editor speed remains completely unaffected.
The agent will use `search_contacts` to get the list, analyze the metadata, and ask you to clarify if there is an ambiguity. It won't make blind guesses with your community records.
Your Common Room API tokens and contact emails never touch external storage. The server runs inside an isolated Vinkius sandbox, ensuring that sensitive member profiles and segment lists are only accessed when your local agent explicitly requests them.
