Multi-Agent Europeana MCP Server Queries

The `search_records` tool injects real museum metadata into your AutoGen agent conversations. One agent can execute the search while a critic agent evaluates the returned JSON to decide if the sources are credible. This dynamic allows for consensus-driven research. If the initial search yields ambiguous results, the agents negotiate a better query and try again until they find the exact historical artifacts needed.

Debate Artifact Provenance

When agents disagree on an item's origin, they can call `get_record` to pull the definitive details from the archive. The detailed object information settles factual disputes instantly. They can further verify creators or locations using `get_entity`. Instead of hallucinating historical timelines, your agents ground their arguments in verified linked data from European institutions.

Coordinate Bulk Data Harvesting

You can assign a dedicated archivist agent to manage `oaipmh_request` operations. This agent handles the raw XML batches, pulling massive amounts of metadata while other agents process the incoming stream. The MCP adapter handles the schema conversions automatically. Your agents focus on analyzing the cultural heritage data rather than figuring out how to format the HTTP requests.

Setup guide

Set up Europeana MCP in AutoGen

Prerequisites

  • Python 3.10+ installed
  • autogen-ext[mcp] package
  • Active Vinkius subscription with a valid endpoint token
  1. 1

    Install AutoGen with MCP

    Run pip install "autogen-ext[mcp]" autogen-agentchat. The MCP extension includes mcp_server_tools for stateless tool access.

  2. 2

    Fetch tools from the MCP

    Call mcp_server_tools(SseServerParams(url=...)) with your Vinkius endpoint. Replace [YOUR_TOKEN_HERE] with your token from cloud.vinkius.com.

  3. 3

    Run your agent

    Pass the tools to AssistantAgent and call agent.run(). The agent invokes Europeana tools and returns structured results.

agent.py
from autogen_ext.tools.mcp import SseServerParams, mcp_server_tools
from autogen_agentchat.agents import AssistantAgent
from autogen_ext.models.openai import OpenAIChatCompletionClient

server_params = SseServerParams(
    url="https://edge.vinkius.com/[YOUR_TOKEN_HERE]/mcp"
)

tools = await mcp_server_tools(server_params)

agent = AssistantAgent(
    name="Europeana_assistant",
    model_client=OpenAIChatCompletionClient(model="gpt-4o"),
    tools=tools,
)

result = await agent.run("List recent Europeana data")
print(result.messages[-1].content)

Common questions about Europeana MCP in AutoGen

Install the autogen-ext[mcp] package. Use mcp_server_tools with your endpoint URL, and pass the resulting list directly to your AssistantAgent constructor.
Yes. You can provide the tool list to specific agents in your group chat. A researcher agent might hold the search permissions while a writer agent synthesizes the findings.
The adapter handles the tool schema, but the bulk harvesting tool returns raw XML strings. Your agents will need explicit instructions on how to parse or extract information from that format.
Historical research often requires cross-referencing and skepticism. A multi-agent setup lets one agent pull records while another actively challenges the interpretation of that metadata.
The integration handles search parameters and public museum records. Because Vinkius hosts this on an ephemeral V8 Isolate Sandbox, your agent's conversation history and API payloads are wiped the second the execution finishes.
