Standardize CI/CD Access for Your Team

Onboard new developers in minutes, not days. By committing a `.vscode/mcp.json` file to your repository, every developer who clones the project automatically gets the same set of Harness tools in their VS Code Copilot. There's no individual setup required. A new team member can immediately ask, "What projects can I work on?" and Copilot will use `list_projects` to give them a correct, up-to-date answer. This ensures everyone on the team is working with the same context and capabilities from day one.

Your Team's Shared Harness MCP Server

Turn Copilot into a shared interface for your deployment pipeline. Any developer on the team can ask questions like, "Show me the YAML for the 'mobile-app-deploy' pipeline." Copilot uses the `get_pipeline` tool to fetch the configuration and display it right in the chat, making it easy to review and understand. This shared access is perfect for pair programming or debugging sessions. You can investigate a failed build together by asking Copilot to `list_executions` and then drill into the logs with `get_execution_status`. Everyone sees the same data because they're all using the same configured MCP server.

Trigger and Verify Deployments Safely

Let your team run predefined pipelines without needing full access to the Harness UI. A developer can ask Copilot, "Start the 'deploy-docs-to-prod' pipeline." The agent uses `execute_pipeline` to trigger the exact job you've authorized through the service account's permissions. After a pipeline runs, anyone can verify its integrity. A simple prompt like, "Pull the audit logs for the last hour," uses the `get_audit_logs` tool to provide a clear record of what happened. It's a secure way to delegate CI/CD operations while maintaining a full audit trail.

Setup guide

Set up Harness MCP in VS Code Copilot

Prerequisites

  • VS Code 1.99 or later with GitHub Copilot extension
  • Active Vinkius subscription with a valid endpoint token
  1. 1

    Open MCP configuration

Open the Command Palette (Cmd+Shift+P / Ctrl+Shift+P) and run "MCP: Add Server". Select HTTP (Streamable) as the server type. VS Code will create .vscode/mcp.json in your workspace.

  2. 2

    Add the Harness MCP

Paste the JSON snippet shown on the right into your .vscode/mcp.json. Replace [YOUR_TOKEN_HERE] with your endpoint token from cloud.vinkius.com.

  3. 3

    Switch to Agent mode

Open Copilot Chat (Cmd+Shift+I / Ctrl+Shift+I) and switch to Agent mode using the dropdown. MCP tools are only available in Agent mode — they do not appear in Edit or Ask modes.

  4. 4

    Verify the connection

In the Copilot Chat input, type # to list available tools. You should see the Harness tools listed. Try asking: "List my recent Harness transactions" and Copilot will invoke them automatically.

Common questions about Harness MCP in VS Code Copilot

You add the server's configuration to a `.vscode/mcp.json` file in your project repository. Once that file is committed and pushed, anyone on the team who pulls the latest code will automatically have the Harness tools available in their Copilot agent.
Yes. Just ask Copilot, "What's the status of the latest 'backend-api' deployment?" The agent will use the `get_execution_status` tool to fetch the current state, step details, and any logs directly from Harness and show them to you.
You don't need to. Just use the pipeline's name. Ask Copilot, "List all pipelines in the 'platform' project." The agent will use `list_pipelines` to get the details, and you can then refer to any of them by name for other tasks, like triggering an execution.
Use the principle of least privilege. Create a dedicated Harness service account for your MCP server with read-only access where possible. While the `list_secrets` tool only shows metadata, the API key you use should be tightly scoped to only the projects and actions your team needs to perform from within VS Code.
The server acts as a pass-through. When you ask for `get_audit_logs`, the MCP server fetches them from Harness and sends them to your client, but it does not store the logs. Vinkius infrastructure is ephemeral, meaning the server instance has no long-term storage, and your data is only ever in memory during a request.
