Autonomous home automation in Windsurf

Cascade reads your current project context to propose smart home actions. It uses `call_ha_service` to adjust lights or climate based on your code activity. Stop switching windows to fix your smart home. Windsurf chains these requests to ensure your environment matches your development session.

Real-time state monitoring for Windsurf

Query your local sensors using `get_entity_state` to pull live data into your workspace. It fetches specific values for temperature, humidity, or power consumption instantly. Feed this data into your scripts or local tests. You get an accurate view of your living space without ever opening a browser dashboard.

Explore your Home Assistant MCP Server

Discover every available device and service by running `list_entity_states` and `list_available_services`. This reveals the exact entity IDs and capabilities currently active in your home. Use this to map out your infrastructure. Once you know your entities, you can build complex automation sequences that Windsurf executes reliably.

Setup guide

Set up Home Assistant MCP in Windsurf

Prerequisites

  • Windsurf IDE installed (macOS, Windows, or Linux)
  • Active Vinkius subscription with a valid endpoint token
  1. 1

    Open MCP configuration

Click the Cascade assistant icon in the sidebar, then click the hammer icon (🔨) at the top of the panel. Select "Configure" to open ~/.codeium/windsurf/mcp_config.json.

  2. 2

    Add the Home Assistant MCP

Paste the JSON snippet shown on the right into the mcpServers object. Replace [YOUR_TOKEN_HERE] with your endpoint token from cloud.vinkius.com.

  3. 3

    Refresh MCPs

Go back to the hammer icon (🔨) in Cascade and click "Refresh". Windsurf will detect the new server. No full restart is needed — the connection is hot-reloaded.

  4. 4

    Verify in Cascade

Start a new Cascade conversation and ask something like "Show my Home Assistant payment history." If connected, Cascade will call the Home Assistant tools directly. You will see a green dot next to the server name in the MCP panel.

Add the server configuration to your `mcp_config.json` file. Once you refresh the MCP panel, Windsurf detects the tools and makes them available to Cascade.
