Autonomous species research with CrewAI

Assign a researcher agent to crawl for specific wildlife records. It works alongside your other agents to build a full biodiversity profile. `search_observations` provides the raw data for your crew. The agents process this information to create summary reports automatically.

Taxonomic verification crews for CrewAI

Have one agent fetch taxon details while another verifies the conservation status. This hierarchical approach ensures high data quality. `get_taxon` gives your agents the necessary biological context. They use this to cross-reference observations against official classifications.

Site monitoring with CrewAI

Keep tabs on specific locations by scanning for new observations regularly. The crew alerts you only when significant findings occur. `get_species_counts` tracks the health of your survey area. Your monitoring agent handles the math so you don't have to.

Setup guide

Set up iNaturalist MCP in CrewAI

Prerequisites

  • Python 3.10+ installed
  • crewai package (pip install crewai)
  • Active Vinkius subscription with a valid endpoint token
  1. 1

    Install CrewAI

    Run pip install crewai to install the framework. MCP support is built-in via the mcps parameter.

  2. 2

    Add the MCP URL to your agent

    Pass your Vinkius endpoint directly to the mcps list. Replace [YOUR_TOKEN_HERE] with your token from cloud.vinkius.com. CrewAI handles tool discovery and caching automatically.

  3. 3

    Kick off your crew

    Create a Crew with your agent and tasks. Call crew.kickoff() — the agent will automatically invoke iNaturalist tools as needed.

crew.py
from crewai import Agent, Task, Crew

agent = Agent(
    role="iNaturalist Analyst",
    goal="Access and analyze iNaturalist data via MCP.",
    backstory="Expert analyst with direct iNaturalist access.",
    mcps=[
        "https://edge.vinkius.com/[YOUR_TOKEN_HERE]/mcp"
    ],
)

task = Task(
    description="List recent iNaturalist transactions",
    agent=agent,
    expected_output="A summary of recent activity",
)

crew = Crew(agents=[agent], tasks=[task])
result = crew.kickoff()
print(result)

Common questions about iNaturalist MCP in CrewAI

You pass the server URL directly into your agent's `mcps` list. The crew immediately gains access to all identification and search tools.
Yes, use the shared memory feature. One agent fetches the observations, and the rest of the crew uses that context to perform their tasks.
Use the tool filter in your MCP configuration. This prevents agents from accessing tools they don't need for their specific role.
Absolutely. You can have an agent call `search_taxa` first, then pass the result to `get_taxon` for a deeper investigation.
The server runs in a zero-trust environment. Your observation queries stay within the ephemeral session, ensuring no unauthorized access to your research.
