Find Exact Tracks with the Musixmatch MCP Server

Your agent uses `match_track_lyrics` to map partial text queries to specific song IDs. If a user remembers a single chorus line, the system queries the database and returns the exact track match. You can then chain `search_tracks` to pull alternate versions or remixes based on the initial text input. We built this for production environments where accuracy matters. OpenAI's built-in guardrails validate the returned IDs before passing them to downstream agents. You don't have to write custom validation logic to handle bad search queries.

Extract Full Lyrical Content

Calling `get_track_lyrics` pulls the complete, licensed text for any verified song ID. When you only need a preview for a UI element or a quick hook verification, your agent runs `get_track_snippet` instead. This saves bandwidth and keeps API response times low during live chat sessions. Handoffs work perfectly here. One specialized agent fetches the raw text, and another handles the formatting or translation. You track the entire execution flow inside the OpenAI dashboard to see exactly which tool fired when.

Pull Artist and Album Catalogs

The `get_artist_details` tool fetches core metadata like aliases, ratings, and social links for any musician. Your pipeline can then trigger `get_artist_albums` to map out their entire discography chronologically. We also included `get_top_tracks` so you can instantly surface trending songs for specific regions or genres. Setting up the integration takes two lines of Python. You initialize `MCPServerStreamableHttp` with your endpoint URL and pass it to the Agent constructor. Enable `cacheToolsList=True` to cut down on discovery latency during startup.

Setup guide

Set up Musixmatch MCP in OpenAI Agents SDK

Prerequisites

  • Python 3.10+ installed
  • openai-agents package (pip install openai-agents)
  • Active Vinkius subscription with a valid endpoint token
  1. 1

    Install the SDK

    Run pip install openai-agents to install the OpenAI Agents SDK. The MCP integration is built-in — no extra dependencies needed.

  2. 2

    Connect via SSE transport

    Use MCPServerSse with your Vinkius endpoint URL. Replace [YOUR_TOKEN_HERE] with your token from cloud.vinkius.com. The SDK auto-discovers all Musixmatch tools at runtime.

  3. 3

    Create your Agent

    Pass the MCP to Agent(mcp_servers=[server]). The agent receives Musixmatch tools as native definitions — JSON schemas resolve automatically.

  4. 4

    Run the agent

    Call Runner.run(agent, prompt) to execute. The agent invokes the appropriate Musixmatch tools and returns structured results. Copy the full example on the right to get started.

agent.py
import asyncio
from agents import Agent, Runner
from agents.mcp import MCPServerSse

async def main():
    async with MCPServerSse(
        url="https://edge.vinkius.com/[YOUR_TOKEN_HERE]/mcp"
    ) as server:
        agent = Agent(
            name="Musixmatch Agent",
            instructions="You have access to Musixmatch tools.",
            mcp_servers=[server],
        )
        result = await Runner.run(agent, "List recent transactions")
        print(result.final_output)

asyncio.run(main())

Common questions about Musixmatch MCP in OpenAI Agents SDK

Install the `openai-agents` package via pip. Pass your endpoint URL into `MCPServerStreamableHttp` and add it to the `mcp_servers` list in your agent configuration.
Yes. You can have one agent run `search_artists` and pass the resulting IDs to a secondary agent that handles album retrieval.
You might be passing a track name instead of a track ID. Always use `search_tracks` first to get the correct identifier before calling the lyrics endpoint.
Set `cacheToolsList=True` when initializing the server. This stops the client from requesting the tool schema on every single run.
The server only processes music metadata like artist names and song snippets. It never reads your prompt history, user session logs, or system instructions.
