Auto-diagnose production alerts in Windsurf

When a production alert fires, Windsurf uses the New Relic MCP Server to pull active alerts via `list_alerts`. Cascade doesn't wait for your input; it immediately takes the alert metadata to find the failing service and queries `get_apm_summary` for golden metrics. From there, Cascade digs into the specific New Relic service levels with `list_service_levels` to see which SLO is breaching. Windsurf presents a complete post-mortem plan with the exact code changes needed before you even open New Relic.

Run raw NRQL queries inside your IDE

Stop switching to the browser to check dashboard charts; Cascade calls `run_nrql` to pull live New Relic telemetry straight into your Windsurf editor. This lets you verify database latency or API error rates while you write code. Cascade processes the raw JSON output from New Relic to verify if your local branch will fix the database bottleneck. It's a faster way to run ad-hoc performance checks without leaving the Windsurf environment.

Inspect New Relic entities directly from Cascade

Cascade maps out your system architecture by calling `list_entities` to find monitored New Relic microservices. It then invokes `get_entity_details` to pull metadata like tags, language runtimes, and health status for the specific service you are editing in Windsurf. Having this live New Relic context helps Cascade avoid breaking upstream dependencies. The agent knows exactly which databases and external APIs your Windsurf code talks to based on live telemetry.

Setup guide

Set up New Relic MCP in Windsurf

Prerequisites

  • Windsurf IDE installed (macOS, Windows, or Linux)
  • Active Vinkius subscription with a valid endpoint token
  1. 1

    Open MCP configuration

Click the Cascade assistant icon in the sidebar, then click the hammer icon (🔨) at the top of the panel. Select "Configure" to open ~/.codeium/windsurf/mcp_config.json.

  2. 2

    Add the New Relic MCP

Paste the JSON snippet shown on the right into the mcpServers object. Replace [YOUR_TOKEN_HERE] with your endpoint token from cloud.vinkius.com.

  3. 3

    Refresh MCPs

Go back to the hammer icon (🔨) in Cascade and click "Refresh". Windsurf will detect the new server. No full restart is needed — the connection is hot-reloaded.

  4. 4

    Verify in Cascade

Start a new Cascade conversation and ask something like "Show my New Relic payment history." If connected, Cascade will call the New Relic tools directly. You will see a green dot next to the server name in the MCP panel.

Common questions about New Relic MCP in Windsurf

Cascade reads alerts using `list_alerts` and automatically queries the broken service's golden metrics. It then inspects your local Windsurf workspace files to pinpoint the exact line of code causing the spike.
Yes, Cascade executes custom queries via `run_nrql` to fetch raw performance data. You can ask it to analyze database performance trends or find slow endpoints directly in your Windsurf chat interface.
Add the endpoint token to your Windsurf `mcp_config.json` file under the `mcpServers` key. Once saved, Cascade auto-discovers all ten New Relic tools and can start querying your telemetry immediately.
You can list your dashboards using `list_dashboards` and retrieve their configurations with `get_dashboard`. This lets Cascade understand how your team monitors production systems directly inside Windsurf.
This server only exposes your New Relic metrics, entity metadata, and alert states. All telemetry data is fetched via secure Vinkius sandboxes, ensuring your raw database contents and Windsurf workspace remain private.
