Query Notion databases inside VS Code Copilot

The `query_database` tool allows VS Code Copilot to pull active task lists from your Notion workspace directly into the editor chat. This means your team queries Notion sprint databases to check technical requirements right inside VS Code Copilot. By using `list_databases` first, VS Code Copilot maps the available schemas across your shared Notion workspace. It then retrieves filtered Notion rows, giving VS Code Copilot up-to-date context on what your team needs to build next.

Edit Notion pages using VS Code Copilot MCP Server

The `update_page` tool gives VS Code Copilot the ability to modify properties and update task statuses inside your team's Notion workspace. When your team commits code, tell VS Code Copilot to mark that specific Notion issue page as resolved. To add technical details, VS Code Copilot uses `append_block_children` to write code blocks directly to the parent Notion page. This keeps your team's Notion documentation perfectly synchronized with your VS Code Copilot development branch.

Search and read Notion docs in VS Code Copilot

The `search` tool allows VS Code Copilot to locate your team's Notion design docs and API specs by title. Once found, VS Code Copilot uses `retrieve_page` to read the Notion document properties and verify the spec metadata. To read the actual text, the agent calls `retrieve_block_children` to pull the Notion document's block content into VS Code Copilot. This allows VS Code Copilot to answer questions about your team's internal Notion wikis without leaving your active file.

Setup guide

Set up Notion MCP in VS Code Copilot

Prerequisites

  • VS Code 1.99 or later with GitHub Copilot extension
  • Active Vinkius subscription with a valid endpoint token
  1. 1

    Open MCP configuration

Open the Command Palette (Cmd+Shift+P / Ctrl+Shift+P) and run "MCP: Add Server". Select HTTP (Streamable) as the server type. VS Code will create .vscode/mcp.json in your workspace.

  2. 2

    Add the Notion MCP

Paste the JSON snippet shown on the right into your .vscode/mcp.json. Replace [YOUR_TOKEN_HERE] with your endpoint token from cloud.vinkius.com.

  3. 3

    Switch to Agent mode

Open Copilot Chat (Cmd+Shift+I / Ctrl+Shift+I) and switch to Agent mode using the dropdown. MCP tools are only available in Agent mode — they do not appear in Edit or Ask modes.

  4. 4

    Verify the connection

In the Copilot Chat input, type # to list available tools. You should see the Notion tools listed. Try asking: "List my recent Notion transactions" and Copilot will invoke them automatically.
