Displaying Congress Members and Bills in Real Time

Use `list_congress_members` to get names and details for current or past US Congressional members. The results stream directly into your React front end, so users see the data appear live—no loading spinner needed. Need specifics? Call `get_bill_details` to fetch full legislative information for any given bill. This works perfectly with Edge Functions because the tool results arrive in real-time.

Querying Congressional History and Treaties

Run `list_congress_sessions` to get start and end dates for any Congress, like the 118th or 117th. This feeds structured date data straight into your Next.js components. Need to track international law? Use `list_congress_treaties` to pull a list of treaties handled by Congress. The output streams immediately, letting users see historical records as they appear.

Tracking Nominations and Committees

When you call `list_congress_nominations`, you get lists of executive and judicial nominations. This data is ideal for displaying status updates in a user dashboard. You can also use `list_congress_committees` to list the various committees involved. Passing these tools into your streamText function makes it easy to build interactive research tools.

Setup guide

Set up U.S. Congress MCP in Vercel AI SDK

Prerequisites

  • Node.js 18+ and a TypeScript project
  • ai + @modelcontextprotocol/sdk packages
  • Active Vinkius subscription with a valid endpoint token
  1. 1

    Install dependencies

    Run npm install ai @modelcontextprotocol/sdk plus your preferred model provider (e.g. @ai-sdk/openai).

  2. 2

    Create the Streamable HTTP transport

    Use StreamableHTTPClientTransport with your Vinkius endpoint URL. Replace [YOUR_TOKEN_HERE] with your token from cloud.vinkius.com.

  3. 3

    Discover and use tools

    Call mcpClient.tools() to auto-discover all U.S. Congress tools. Pass them directly to generateText() or streamText() — no manual schema definitions needed.

  4. 4

    Works with any model provider

    Swap openai("gpt-4o") for any AI SDK provider — Anthropic, Google, Mistral. The MCP tools work identically across all supported models.

index.ts
import { experimental_createMCPClient as createMCPClient } from "ai";
import { StreamableHTTPClientTransport } from "@modelcontextprotocol/sdk/client/streamableHttp";
import { generateText } from "ai";
import { openai } from "@ai-sdk/openai";

const transport = new StreamableHTTPClientTransport(
  new URL("https://edge.vinkius.com/[YOUR_TOKEN_HERE]/mcp")
);

const mcpClient = await createMCPClient({ transport });
const tools = await mcpClient.tools();

const { text } = await generateText({
  model: openai("gpt-4o"),
  tools,
  prompt: "List recent U.S. Congress transactions",
});

console.log(text);
await mcpClient.close();
