Deep Dive into Bill Status

Find the full details on a specific bill by calling `get_bill_details`. The output of that call is automatically indexed alongside other data. When you query later, LlamaIndex searches this raw API data for answers, preventing hallucination. You build RAG applications where live legislative data becomes part of your searchable knowledge base. You get facts grounded in the source, not just general summaries.

Indexing Committee Records

Don't just list congressional committees using `list_congress_committees`; index them. This means every name and function becomes a searchable document chunk. You can query past committee structures or members by semantic meaning. This is huge for historical research. Instead of needing the exact tool call, you ask a question, and LlamaIndex retrieves the relevant API data from its knowledge graph.

Searching Past Congressional Sessions

Want to know what happened during the 118th Congress? Run `list_congress_sessions` and index those session records. You then combine this with results from `list_congress_members`. Your agent queries the indexed knowledge, finding connections between specific members and sessions that might not be obvious just by listing them out.

    Point BasicMCPClient to your Vinkius endpoint URL. Replace [YOUR_TOKEN_HERE] with your token from cloud.vinkius.com. Supports SSE and Streamable HTTP transports.

  3. 3

    Convert to LlamaIndex tools

    Call mcp_tool_spec.to_tool_list_async() to convert all U.S. Congress MCP tools into native FunctionTool objects that any LlamaIndex agent can use.

  4. 4

    Run with any LLM

    Create a FunctionAgent with the tools and your preferred LLM. Swap OpenAI for Anthropic, Gemini, or any LlamaIndex-supported provider.

agent.py
from llama_index.tools.mcp import BasicMCPClient, McpToolSpec
from llama_index.core.agent.workflow import FunctionAgent
from llama_index.llms.openai import OpenAI

# Connect to the MCP
mcp_client = BasicMCPClient(
    "https://edge.vinkius.com/[YOUR_TOKEN_HERE]/mcp"
)
mcp_tool_spec = McpToolSpec(client=mcp_client)

# Convert MCP tools to LlamaIndex tools
tools = await mcp_tool_spec.to_tool_list_async()

# Create and run the agent
agent = FunctionAgent(
    tools=tools,
    llm=OpenAI(model="gpt-4o"),
    system_prompt="You have access to U.S. Congress tools.",
)
response = await agent.run("List recent U.S. Congress data")

Common questions about U.S. Congress MCP in LlamaIndex

LlamaIndex indexes the raw output from tools like `list_congress_sessions`. This means you're not limited to querying only what a specific tool call provides; you can search across the entire body of recorded legislative facts.
Yes. You index data from multiple sources—say, `list_congress_bills` and `list_congress_treaties`. Then you ask a single question that requires merging facts from both datasets.
You first call `list_congress_nominations` and then index those records. You can then ask highly specific questions, like 'Who was nominated for this position in 2015?' and get a direct answer from the indexed data.
You use `list_congress_members` to pull the member list, and then index it. This allows you to query the knowledge base using natural language questions about specific roles or service periods.
You pull the amendment list via `list_congress_amendments`, and then index those details. This allows you to perform semantic searches across all amendments, even if your query uses different terminology.
