Run complex searches with `get_sites` on the MCP Server.

`get_sites` lets your agent search through extensive USGS site metadata. Since you're building enterprise pipelines, combine multiple filters—county codes, state codes, and bounding boxes—to narrow down exactly what you need. This tool feeds location context directly into your Google Cloud workflow, ensuring the subsequent data calls are scoped correctly.

Query historical groundwater levels using `get_groundwater_levels`.

Use `get_groundwater_levels` to pull manually recorded water level history. The Gemini models in your agent can then take this time-series data and cross-reference it with BigQuery records for deeper analysis. This capability is critical when comparing subsurface changes against known geographical datasets you already host.

Process daily metrics via `get_daily_values` on the MCP Server.

`get_daily_values` retrieves summarized streamflow data (mean, min, max) for historical analysis. Pass a primary filter to keep your query clean and efficient within the Vertex AI context. Your agent can ingest these structured daily values and append them directly into BigQuery tables alongside other corporate metrics.

Setup guide

Set up USGS Water Services MCP in Google ADK

Prerequisites

  • Python 3.10+ installed
  • google-adk package (pip install google-adk)
  • Active Vinkius subscription with a valid endpoint token
  1. 1

    Install Google ADK

    Run pip install google-adk to install the Agent Development Kit. MCP support is included via the McpToolset class.

  2. 2

    Connect via SSE transport

    Use McpToolset.from_server() with SseServerParams pointing to your Vinkius endpoint. Replace [YOUR_TOKEN_HERE] with your token from cloud.vinkius.com.

  3. 3

    Create an LlmAgent

    Pass the returned mcp_tools list directly to LlmAgent(tools=mcp_tools). The ADK maps each MCP tool to a native Gemini function call — no manual schema definitions required.

  4. 4

    Run with any Gemini model

    The agent works with any Gemini model (gemini-2.0-flash, gemini-2.5-pro, etc.). Copy the full example on the right to get started with USGS Water Services tools in your ADK agent.

agent.py
from google.adk.agents import LlmAgent
from google.adk.tools.mcp_tool.mcp_toolset import McpToolset
from google.adk.tools.mcp_tool.mcp_session_manager import SseServerParams

# Connect to the MCP via SSE
mcp_tools, exit_stack = await McpToolset.from_server(
    connection_params=SseServerParams(
        url="https://edge.vinkius.com/[YOUR_TOKEN_HERE]/mcp"
    )
)

# Create your agent with auto-discovered tools
agent = LlmAgent(
    name="USGS Water Services_agent",
    model="gemini-2.0-flash",
    instruction="You have access to USGS Water Services tools via MCP.",
    tools=mcp_tools,
)

Common questions about USGS Water Services MCP in Google ADK

You'll use the `get_instantaneous_values` tool. Your agent calls this, specifying filters like state or HUC code, and then Gemini reasons over that output within your BigQuery environment.
Yes, use `get_statistics`. You specify 'annual' as the timeframe. The tool fetches approved aggregate data, which then becomes available inside your agent's working context in Vertex AI.
The system provides streamflow measurements, groundwater level records (manually recorded), and site metadata. Your agent can treat these diverse sources as one unified data set within BigQuery.
Absolutely. Every tool, like `get_instantaneous_values`, requires specific filters (siteCd, countyCd, etc.). This structured input ensures your agent doesn't retrieve unnecessary or ambiguous data.
The server touches publicly available hydrological records: instantaneous values, daily summaries, and site metadata. Since you are working within a secured BigQuery environment, your access and usage history remain fully contained.
