Key Capabilities

Control physical hardware with Windsurf Cascade

`call_function` executes predefined firmware code on your hardware to trigger physical actuators, toggle relays, or adjust system modes. Cascade takes your high-level goal, locates the target device, and fires the exact function payload without asking you for manual confirmation at every step. If a sensor reports high temperature, the agent doesn't just warn you. It reads the device state with `get_device_info` and immediately triggers the cooling pump. You get a fully automated feedback loop running right inside your editor.

Monitor live sensor variables on demand

`read_variable` retrieves real-time data like temperature, humidity, or battery levels directly from your online microcontrollers. By exposing these live metrics directly to your editor environment, Cascade analyzes raw telemetry on the fly. The agent pairs this tool with `ping_device` to check connection health before pulling data. If a device goes quiet, Cascade identifies the dropout and alerts you with the exact timestamp of the last successful handshake.

Coordinate device fleets and broadcast events

`publish_event` broadcasts custom event strings to the Particle Cloud to trigger webhooks or notify other connected hardware. Using this tool, your development environment acts as a central dispatcher for your entire physical fleet. Cascade uses `get_devices` to map out your active hardware inventory before sending updates. It renames mislabeled units using `rename_device` to keep your workspace clean and organized.

Setup guide

Set up Particle IoT MCP in Windsurf

Prerequisites

  • Windsurf IDE installed (macOS, Windows, or Linux)
  • Active Vinkius subscription with a valid endpoint token
  1. 1

    Open MCP configuration

Click the Cascade assistant icon in the sidebar, then click the hammer icon (🔨) at the top of the panel. Select "Configure" to open ~/.codeium/windsurf/mcp_config.json.

  2. 2

    Add the Particle IoT MCP

Paste the JSON snippet shown on the right into the mcpServers object. Replace [YOUR_TOKEN_HERE] with your endpoint token from cloud.vinkius.com.

  3. 3

    Refresh MCPs

Go back to the hammer icon (🔨) in Cascade and click "Refresh". Windsurf will detect the new server. No full restart is needed — the connection is hot-reloaded.

  4. 4

    Verify in Cascade

Start a new Cascade conversation and ask something like "Show my Particle IoT payment history." If connected, Cascade will call the Particle IoT tools directly. You will see a green dot next to the server name in the MCP panel.

Common questions about Particle IoT MCP in Windsurf

Open your `mcp_config.json` file and add the Particle IoT MCP Server configuration under the `mcpServers` block. Once you save and hit refresh, Cascade instantly registers all eight hardware tools for active use.
Yes, Cascade analyzes the device interface and chains tools autonomously. It will check device health with `ping_device`, pull sensor data using `read_variable`, and trigger an actuator via `call_function` in a single execution plan.
Cascade runs `ping_device` to verify the connection status before attempting any read or write actions. If a device is offline, the agent halts the chain and reports the last connection time from the cloud registry.
You can use `unclaim_device` to remove hardware from your account entirely, but this action is permanent. The agent will ask for explicit confirmation before executing this destructive operation.
All Particle credentials and device telemetry stay inside the Vinkius secure sandbox. The server processes raw sensor values and function parameters in memory, never writing your API tokens to persistent storage.
