One Config for the Whole Team

Add the BasicOps server to a `.vscode/mcp.json` file and commit it to your repository. Now everyone on your team gets the same tools in Copilot automatically. No individual setup required. This means every developer can create tasks with `create_task` or check project status with `get_project` using the exact same interface. It standardizes how your team interacts with BasicOps, right from their editor.

Interact with BasicOps in VS Code

You're already in VS Code. Now you can manage your projects there too. Open Copilot Chat, switch to agent mode, and ask it to list your projects (`list_projects`) or pull the details for a specific task (`get_task`). This is a huge time-saver. Before you start a new feature branch, you can get all the context from the task, including messages (`list_task_messages`), without ever opening a browser. Your workflow stays in one place.

Automate Project Management Tasks

Because these tools are available to your agent, you can build simple, conversational workflows. Ask Copilot to get a list of tasks (`list_project_tasks`), and then ask it to update one of them (`update_task`) in a follow-up command. A team lead can quickly check who's available with `list_team_users` and then create a new project (`create_project`) with the right people assigned, all from a single chat session in VS Code.

Setup guide

Set up BasicOps MCP in VS Code Copilot

Prerequisites

  • VS Code 1.99 or later with GitHub Copilot extension
  • Active Vinkius subscription with a valid endpoint token
  1. 1

    Open MCP configuration

Open the Command Palette (Cmd+Shift+P / Ctrl+Shift+P) and run "MCP: Add Server". Select HTTP (Streamable) as the server type. VS Code will create .vscode/mcp.json in your workspace.

  2. 2

    Add the BasicOps MCP

Paste the JSON snippet shown on the right into your .vscode/mcp.json. Replace [YOUR_TOKEN_HERE] with your endpoint token from cloud.vinkius.com.

  3. 3

    Switch to Agent mode

Open Copilot Chat (Cmd+Shift+I / Ctrl+Shift+I) and switch to Agent mode using the dropdown. MCP tools are only available in Agent mode — they do not appear in Edit or Ask modes.

  4. 4

    Verify the connection

In the Copilot Chat input, type # to list available tools. You should see the BasicOps tools listed. Try asking: "List my recent BasicOps transactions" and Copilot will invoke them automatically.

Common questions about BasicOps MCP in VS Code Copilot

Create a `.vscode/mcp.json` file in your project's root directory and add the BasicOps MCP server configuration. Commit that file to your Git repo, and every developer who pulls the project will have the MCP tools available in Copilot.
Yes. Just tell Copilot's agent mode 'create a new project called...'. It uses the `create_project` tool to set it up in BasicOps for you. It's the fastest way to get a new project started.
It keeps you in your editor. Instead of context-switching to a browser to check a task or update its status, you can do it directly within VS Code's chat panel. This saves time and helps you maintain focus on your code.
The `get_project` tool will simply report back that the project wasn't found. Your agent will relay this message to you in the chat, so you'll know immediately without causing an error.
All requests involving your BasicOps project, task, and user data are processed in isolated, single-use sandboxes on Vinkius. Your data is encrypted end-to-end and is never persisted. We act as a secure proxy, not a data store.
