Map Calibre-Web catalogs to Google ADK

Your Google ADK agent calls the `get_opds_catalog` tool to dump your entire Calibre-Web book catalog into Gemini's long-context window. Because Gemini handles millions of tokens, your agent can read the entire catalog at once and find connections across thousands of book titles without chunking. You pass this toolset to your agent using the HTTP transport. This lets your Google Cloud pipeline index your e-book metadata alongside other business data assets.

Extract shelf data using this MCP Server

The `get_opds_shelf` tool pulls book lists from specific shelves directly into your Google ADK agent. This lets you isolate specific genres or reading lists, avoiding unnecessary API overhead when processing deep queries. You can write the output of these shelf queries straight to BigQuery. This helps you track reading trends or analyze document categories using Vertex AI tools.

Run Kobo sync jobs through Google Cloud agents

The `sync_kobo_library` tool initiates a metadata sync between your Calibre-Web account and your Kobo e-reader via this MCP link. Your Google ADK agent triggers this sync automatically whenever new books are added to your library. The agent uses your Kobo Token to authenticate the sync over a secure HTTP transport. This keeps your physical device updated without you having to plug it into a computer or click manual sync buttons.

Setup guide

Set up Calibre-Web MCP in Google ADK

Prerequisites

  • Python 3.10+ installed
  • google-adk package (pip install google-adk)
  • Active Vinkius subscription with a valid endpoint token
  1. 1

    Install Google ADK

    Run pip install google-adk to install the Agent Development Kit. MCP support is included via the McpToolset class.

  2. 2

    Connect via SSE transport

    Use McpToolset.from_server() with SseServerParams pointing to your Vinkius endpoint. Replace [YOUR_TOKEN_HERE] with your token from cloud.vinkius.com.

  3. 3

    Create an LlmAgent

    Pass the returned mcp_tools list directly to LlmAgent(tools=mcp_tools). The ADK maps each MCP tool to a native Gemini function call — no manual schema definitions required.

  4. 4

    Run with any Gemini model

    The agent works with any Gemini model (gemini-2.0-flash, gemini-2.5-pro, etc.). Copy the full example on the right to get started with Calibre-Web tools in your ADK agent.

agent.py
from google.adk.agents import LlmAgent
from google.adk.tools.mcp_tool.mcp_toolset import McpToolset
from google.adk.tools.mcp_tool.mcp_session_manager import SseServerParams

# Connect to the MCP via SSE
mcp_tools, exit_stack = await McpToolset.from_server(
    connection_params=SseServerParams(
        url="https://edge.vinkius.com/[YOUR_TOKEN_HERE]/mcp"
    )
)

# Create your agent with auto-discovered tools
agent = LlmAgent(
    name="Calibre-Web_agent",
    model="gemini-2.0-flash",
    instruction="You have access to Calibre-Web tools via MCP.",
    tools=mcp_tools,
)

Common questions about Calibre-Web MCP in Google ADK

You initialize the Calibre-Web MCP Server using the McpToolset class with the server's HTTP URL. Then, you pass this toolset directly into the tools list of your LlmAgent in your Python script.
Yes. Gemini's million-token context allows your Google ADK agent to ingest the entire feed from `get_opds_catalog` and answer complex questions about your whole book collection.
The connection runs over a secure, streamable HTTP transport. You can also use the tool names filter in Google ADK to restrict your agent's access to only specific tools.
You use the tool_names filter when defining your McpToolset. This lets you expose only `get_opds_shelf` while blocking access to writing tools like `sync_kobo_library`.
The server processes your Kobo tokens and library credentials strictly in volatile memory inside an isolated V8 sandbox. No database records are kept on Vinkius, ensuring your private e-book metadata and sync tokens remain completely private.
