Index your books with LlamaIndex

Use `get_opds_catalog` to pull your library into a vector store. The agent reads the catalog and converts it into searchable embeddings. Your RAG application now understands your collection. You can ask questions about your library and get grounded answers.

Query shelves using LlamaIndex

The `get_opds_shelf` tool fetches specific book details for your index. It provides the ground truth for your LlamaIndex retrieval pipeline. You stop hallucinating book lists. The agent relies on the actual API output to build your knowledge graph.

Automate syncs within LlamaIndex

Execute `sync_kobo_library` as part of your document ingestion loop. The tool updates your device status while the index stays in sync. It ensures your digital records match your physical device state. Everything happens inside the LlamaIndex framework.

Setup guide

Set up Calibre-Web MCP in LlamaIndex

Prerequisites

  • Python 3.10+ installed
  • llama-index-tools-mcp package
  • Active Vinkius subscription with a valid endpoint token
  1. 1

    Install dependencies

    Run pip install llama-index-tools-mcp llama-index-llms-openai. The MCP tools package provides BasicMCPClient and McpToolSpec.

  2. 2

    Connect with BasicMCPClient

    Point BasicMCPClient to your Vinkius endpoint URL. Replace [YOUR_TOKEN_HERE] with your token from cloud.vinkius.com. Supports SSE and Streamable HTTP transports.

  3. 3

    Convert to LlamaIndex tools

    Call mcp_tool_spec.to_tool_list_async() to convert all Calibre-Web MCP tools into native FunctionTool objects that any LlamaIndex agent can use.

  4. 4

    Run with any LLM

    Create a FunctionAgent with the tools and your preferred LLM. Swap OpenAI for Anthropic, Gemini, or any LlamaIndex-supported provider.

agent.py
from llama_index.tools.mcp import BasicMCPClient, McpToolSpec
from llama_index.core.agent.workflow import FunctionAgent
from llama_index.llms.openai import OpenAI

# Connect to the MCP
mcp_client = BasicMCPClient(
    "https://edge.vinkius.com/[YOUR_TOKEN_HERE]/mcp"
)
mcp_tool_spec = McpToolSpec(client=mcp_client)

# Convert MCP tools to LlamaIndex tools
tools = await mcp_tool_spec.to_tool_list_async()

# Create and run the agent
agent = FunctionAgent(
    tools=tools,
    llm=OpenAI(model="gpt-4o"),
    system_prompt="You have access to Calibre-Web tools.",
)
response = await agent.run("List recent Calibre-Web data")

Common questions about Calibre-Web MCP in LlamaIndex

You use the MCP tool spec to wrap the server functions. LlamaIndex then converts these into tools that your agent can use to populate your vector index.
Absolutely. By indexing the output of `get_opds_shelf`, you create a queryable interface for your specific book collections.
Yes, the JSON output from the tools maps directly to your document objects. You store the metadata and use it for semantic search.
It fetches data in chunks via the OPDS tools. You avoid memory bloat by pulling only the metadata your agent needs for the current index update.
We isolate your library data inside an ephemeral sandbox. No raw book metadata is stored on our servers; it exists only within your local LlamaIndex index.
