Automate Case Management Safely

Build agents that handle your firm's caseload. Your agent can `create_matter` for a new client intake, but the OpenAI SDK's built-in guardrails validate the action before it ever hits your Clio account. You can also equip agents to `get_matter` details or `search_matters` by keyword to find case files instantly. This setup is perfect for multi-agent workflows. For instance, an intake agent can `create_contact` and then hand off to a case-setup agent to `create_matter` and `create_task` for initial filings. The entire sequence is captured in the OpenAI dashboard, giving you a full audit trail of what your agents did.

Track Time and Billing with your MCP Server

Put agents in charge of logging billable hours and expenses directly into Clio. After a client call, an agent can use `create_activity` to add a `TimeEntry`. The SDK's validation ensures the agent doesn't log time against the wrong matter or use an invalid activity type, protecting your financial data. You can also build a specialized billing agent to monitor firm revenue. It can `list_bills` to check for overdue invoices and `get_bill` for specific details. That agent can then use other tools to send reminders, with the OpenAI dashboard providing a complete trace of every action taken.

Keep Your Firm Organized

An agent can automatically manage your firm's to-do list. When a new case is opened with `create_matter`, it can then `create_task` for standard procedures like 'File initial complaint' and set a due date. This prevents critical deadlines from falling through the cracks. Document everything without lifting a finger. Your agent can take a meeting summary and use `create_note` to attach it to the correct matter in Clio. It can also `list_communications` to find prior emails related to a case, giving you context in seconds. The OpenAI SDK makes sure these actions are properly structured before they're executed.

Setup guide

Set up Clio MCP in OpenAI Agents SDK

Prerequisites

  • Python 3.10+ installed
  • openai-agents package (pip install openai-agents)
  • Active Vinkius subscription with a valid endpoint token
  1. 1

    Install the SDK

    Run pip install openai-agents to install the OpenAI Agents SDK. The MCP integration is built-in — no extra dependencies needed.

  2. 2

    Connect via SSE transport

    Use MCPServerSse with your Vinkius endpoint URL. Replace [YOUR_TOKEN_HERE] with your token from cloud.vinkius.com. The SDK auto-discovers all Clio tools at runtime.

  3. 3

    Create your Agent

    Pass the MCP to Agent(mcp_servers=[server]). The agent receives Clio tools as native definitions — JSON schemas resolve automatically.

  4. 4

    Run the agent

    Call Runner.run(agent, prompt) to execute. The agent invokes the appropriate Clio tools and returns structured results. Copy the full example on the right to get started.

agent.py
import asyncio
from agents import Agent, Runner
from agents.mcp import MCPServerSse

async def main():
    async with MCPServerSse(
        url="https://edge.vinkius.com/[YOUR_TOKEN_HERE]/mcp"
    ) as server:
        agent = Agent(
            name="Clio Agent",
            instructions="You have access to Clio tools.",
            mcp_servers=[server],
        )
        result = await Runner.run(agent, "List recent transactions")
        print(result.final_output)

asyncio.run(main())

Common questions about Clio MCP in OpenAI Agents SDK

First, your agent needs the client's contact ID, which it can get with `get_contact`. Then, it calls `create_matter` with the case reference number and a description. The OpenAI SDK validates the request before sending it to your Clio account.
Yes. Your agent uses the `list_matters` tool and sets the `status` filter to 'open'. This returns a list of all active cases, including their case number, client, and description.
Absolutely. The `create_activity` tool lets your agent log time entries. You just need to provide the date, duration in seconds, the matter ID, and specify the type as 'TimeEntry'.
The OpenAI SDK is built for production. Its guardrails and action validation prevent your agent from making malformed requests to Clio. The agent handoff and tracing features are essential for building reliable, multi-step legal workflows.
This server only interacts with your Clio data when your agent explicitly calls a tool. It processes information like contact details, matter descriptions, and billing records. Vinkius provides an ephemeral, zero-trust sandbox for each request, and your auth token secures the connection.
