Stream DOI metadata to your UI.

Your users hate loading spinners. With the Vercel AI SDK, you pipe the `get_crossref_doi` tool straight into your Next.js frontend. The moment a user pastes a DOI string, the application resolves it and streams back the title, authors, and abstract in real-time. This MCP Server handles the raw connection to the 140-million record registry. You just call `mcpClient.tools()` and pass the results to `streamText`. The interface updates instantly as the academic metadata arrives.

Build live author portfolios with Vercel AI SDK.

Researchers publish across dozens of journals. Finding a complete bibliography usually takes hours of manual scraping. Now your React app can fire off `search_crossref_author` and render citation counts instantly. Edge functions handle the heavy lifting. You pass the author's name, the tool queries the database, and the AI agent formats the publication list. Your users see the sorted results appear on screen as fast as the LLM can generate the text.

Query the entire scientific registry.

Sometimes you only have partial information. The `search_crossref` tool takes any keyword or journal name and digs through the global academic archive. It pulls back exact DOIs and full bibliographic records. Integrating this requires almost zero boilerplate. You initialize the client with `createMCPClient`, hook it up to your chosen transport, and let the agent figure out the search parameters. Close the connection with `mcpClient.close()` when the user navigates away.

Setup guide

Set up CrossRef MCP in Vercel AI SDK

Prerequisites

  • Node.js 18+ and a TypeScript project
  • ai + @modelcontextprotocol/sdk packages
  • Active Vinkius subscription with a valid endpoint token
  1. 1

    Install dependencies

    Run npm install ai @modelcontextprotocol/sdk plus your preferred model provider (e.g. @ai-sdk/openai).

  2. 2

    Create the Streamable HTTP transport

    Use StreamableHTTPClientTransport with your Vinkius endpoint URL. Replace [YOUR_TOKEN_HERE] with your token from cloud.vinkius.com.

  3. 3

    Discover and use tools

    Call mcpClient.tools() to auto-discover all CrossRef tools. Pass them directly to generateText() or streamText() — no manual schema definitions needed.

  4. 4

    Works with any model provider

    Swap openai("gpt-4o") for any AI SDK provider — Anthropic, Google, Mistral. The MCP tools work identically across all supported models.

index.ts
import { experimental_createMCPClient as createMCPClient } from "ai";
import { StreamableHTTPClientTransport } from "@modelcontextprotocol/sdk/client/streamableHttp";
import { generateText } from "ai";
import { openai } from "@ai-sdk/openai";

const transport = new StreamableHTTPClientTransport(
  new URL("https://edge.vinkius.com/[YOUR_TOKEN_HERE]/mcp")
);

const mcpClient = await createMCPClient({ transport });
const tools = await mcpClient.tools();

const { text } = await generateText({
  model: openai("gpt-4o"),
  tools,
  prompt: "List recent CrossRef transactions",
});

console.log(text);
await mcpClient.close();

Common questions about CrossRef MCP in Vercel AI SDK

Run `npm install ai @ai-sdk/mcp`. Then instantiate the client using `createMCPClient({ transport: { type: "http", url: "..." } })` and pass the tools to your generation function.
Yes. The HTTP transport works perfectly in Vercel Edge Functions. You can resolve DOIs without spinning up a heavy Node.js backend.
Yes, that is the main benefit of this setup. When you call the search tools, you pass the results to `streamText`. Your frontend renders the citation numbers as they arrive.
The tool returns a standard error response. Your agent reads the failure and can instantly inform the user that the record is missing.
Vinkius runs this server in a V8 Isolate Sandbox. The system processes academic query strings and author names ephemerally. We never store your search history or the generated bibliographies.
