How to Use the Matrix/Element MCP in CrewAI
Deploy a crew of specialized CrewAI agents to route alerts and sync Matrix/Element communications via an MCP Server.
Works with every AI agent you already use
…and any MCP-compatible client
Connect Matrix/Element MCP to CrewAI
Create your Vinkius account to connect Matrix/Element to CrewAI and route execution through our secure gateway. The platform manages server hosting, runtime updates, and security layers. Configuration requires no manual server provisioning.
Assign specialized Matrix moderation tasks to a team of CrewAI agents
The `get_room_state` tool provides your CrewAI moderator agent with the current list of members, permissions, and power levels. This agent uses the MCP Server to analyze the room configuration and spot unauthorized changes. If the moderator agent detects an issue, it coordinates with an admin agent. The admin agent then uses `set_room_state` or `leave_room` to secure the channel, isolating threats without human intervention.
Route and escalate critical alerts across multiple rooms automatically
The `send_message` tool allows your notification agent to dispatch alerts to specific operational channels. In a CrewAI setup, a researcher agent identifies system anomalies and passes the raw data to the writer agent, which formats and sends the message. When a channel is closed or archived, the agent uses `leave_room` to clean up its active room list. This keeps your agent's workspace clean and prevents unnecessary background polling.
Automate user directory searches and room invites
The `search_user_directory` tool enables your onboarding agent to find specific team members on the homeserver. The agent runs this search based on natural language queries passed from other members of the crew. Once the user is found, the agent uses `join_room` or `knock_room` to bring them into the correct discussion space. This automates the setup of project-specific channels as soon as new tasks are created.
Set up Matrix/Element MCP in CrewAI
Prerequisites
- Python 3.10+ installed
-
crewaipackage (pip install crewai) - Active Vinkius subscription with a valid endpoint token
- 1
Install CrewAI
Run
pip install crewaito install the framework. MCP support is built-in via themcpsparameter. - 2
Add the MCP URL to your agent
Pass your Vinkius endpoint directly to the
mcpslist. Replace[YOUR_TOKEN_HERE]with your token from cloud.vinkius.com. CrewAI handles tool discovery and caching automatically. - 3
Kick off your crew
Create a
Crewwith your agent and tasks. Callcrew.kickoff()— the agent will automatically invoke Matrix/Element tools as needed.
from crewai import Agent, Task, Crew
agent = Agent(
role="Matrix/Element Analyst",
goal="Access and analyze Matrix/Element data via MCP.",
backstory="Expert analyst with direct Matrix/Element access.",
mcps=[
"https://edge.vinkius.com/[YOUR_TOKEN_HERE]/mcp"
],
)
task = Task(
description="List recent Matrix/Element transactions",
agent=agent,
expected_output="A summary of recent activity",
)
crew = Crew(agents=[agent], tasks=[task])
result = crew.kickoff()
print(result) Prerequisites
- Python 3.10+ installed
-
crewai+crewai-toolspackages - Active Vinkius subscription with a valid endpoint token
- 1
Install dependencies
Run
pip install crewai crewai-tools. TheMCPServerAdapterhandles lifecycle management and tool conversion. - 2
Connect with MCPServerAdapter
Use
MCPServerAdapteras a context manager withSseServerParameterspointing to your Vinkius endpoint. The adapter automatically manages connection lifecycle. - 3
Assign tools and run
Pass the returned
mcp_toolsto your agent'stoolsparameter. The adapter converts MCP tools to nativeBaseToolobjects compatible with all CrewAI agents.

from crewai_tools import MCPServerAdapter
from mcp import SseServerParameters
