Map Queries to MusicBrainz IDs

Your agent can take a fuzzy query like "that band from Manchester" and figure out the exact MusicBrainz ID. It starts with a `search_artists` call, maybe refining with `search_areas` if the query includes a location. Once it has the ID, it's locked in. The next step in the chain can confidently use that ID with tools like `get_artist` or `browse_releases_by_artist` to pull specific, structured data. No more guesswork.

Build Discography Traversal Chains

Answer questions that require multiple steps, like "Find all official US releases of a specific album." A LangChain agent can use the MusicBrainz MCP Server to first `search_release_groups` to find the canonical album. Then, it feeds that group ID into `get_release_group` to get a list of all associated release IDs. Finally, it loops, calling `get_release` on each one to check the country code and status. You just define the tools; the agent builds the plan.

Find Specific Recordings and Works

Go beyond albums and artists. Give your agent the tools to differentiate between a composition and a recording. It can use `search_works` to find a song's original writers and ISWC. Then, it can use `search_recordings` to find every known version of that song, from the original to a live acoustic cover. Chaining these calls lets you track a song's entire lifecycle.

Setup guide

Set up MusicBrainz MCP in LangChain

Prerequisites

  • Python 3.10+ installed
  • langchain-mcp-adapters + langgraph packages
  • Active Vinkius subscription with a valid endpoint token
  1. 1

    Install dependencies

    Run pip install langchain-mcp-adapters langgraph langchain-openai. The MCP adapters package converts MCP tools into native LangChain BaseTool objects.

  2. 2

    Connect via HTTP transport

    Use MultiServerMCPClient with "transport": "http" pointing to your Vinkius endpoint. Replace [YOUR_TOKEN_HERE] with your token from cloud.vinkius.com.

  3. 3

    Create a ReAct agent

    Pass the discovered tools to create_react_agent() from LangGraph. The agent automatically routes MusicBrainz tool calls through the MCP protocol.

  4. 4

    Run with any LLM

    Swap ChatOpenAI for ChatAnthropic, ChatGoogleGenerativeAI, or any LangChain-compatible model. The MCP tools work identically across all providers.

agent.py
from langchain_mcp_adapters.client import MultiServerMCPClient
from langgraph.prebuilt import create_react_agent
from langchain_openai import ChatOpenAI

async with MultiServerMCPClient({
    "musicbrainz-mcp": {
        "transport": "http",
        "url": "https://edge.vinkius.com/[YOUR_TOKEN_HERE]/mcp",
    }
}) as client:
    tools = client.get_tools()

    agent = create_react_agent(
        ChatOpenAI(model="gpt-4o"),
        tools,
    )
    result = await agent.ainvoke({
        "messages": "List recent MusicBrainz transactions"
    })
    print(result["messages"][-1].content)

Common questions about MusicBrainz MCP in LangChain

The agent first runs `search_artists` to get the artist's MBID. It then calls `browse_releases_by_artist` and sorts the results by date to find the earliest release.
Yes. Every tool call your LangChain agent makes is automatically traced, showing you the exact inputs, outputs, and latency for each step.
You can build a simple loop in your chain or use a ToolCallingAgent that repeatedly calls a browse tool like `browse_releases_by_label` with an incrementing offset until it gets no more results.
Absolutely. You can pass the MusicBrainz tools to an agent alongside any other LangChain tool, like a SQL database or a web search API, to build more complex applications.
Your agent sends queries containing artist names or album titles. These requests pass through the Vinkius MCP endpoint in a temporary, sandboxed environment. We don't log or store the content of your queries or the MusicBrainz data that's returned.
