Share music data across the team

The `search_artists` tool allows any developer in your repository to find musician IDs and active dates without leaving the editor. You commit the MCP config to your repo, and VS Code Copilot instantly knows how to query the database. That means you aren't wasting time writing curl commands to test endpoints. Your AI client runs `search_release_groups` to find canonical album versions, dropping the exact JSON into your workspace.

Retrieve specific audio metadata

The `get_work` tool pulls composition details, writers, and ISWCs for specific musical pieces. Copilot reads this data to help you debug your music cataloging application. You also get exact label histories. The `get_label` tool returns founding dates and label types. The MCP Server handles the formatting so Copilot can explain the data structure to you.

Browse catalogs via VS Code Copilot

The `browse_releases_by_label` tool pulls up to 100 release titles and dates for a specific imprint. Copilot uses this to verify that your frontend correctly displays label discographies. Geographic mapping is built in too. The `search_areas` tool fetches ISO codes for cities and countries. Copilot grabs these codes so you can properly localize your music application.

Setup guide

Set up MusicBrainz MCP in VS Code Copilot

Prerequisites

  • VS Code 1.99 or later with GitHub Copilot extension
  • Active Vinkius subscription with a valid endpoint token
  1. 1

    Open MCP configuration

Open the Command Palette (Cmd+Shift+P / Ctrl+Shift+P) and run "MCP: Add Server". Select HTTP (Streamable) as the server type. VS Code will create .vscode/mcp.json in your workspace.

  2. 2

    Add the MusicBrainz MCP

Paste the JSON snippet shown on the right into your .vscode/mcp.json. Replace [YOUR_TOKEN_HERE] with your endpoint token from cloud.vinkius.com.

  3. 3

    Switch to Agent mode

Open Copilot Chat (Cmd+Shift+I / Ctrl+Shift+I) and switch to Agent mode using the dropdown. MCP tools are only available in Agent mode — they do not appear in Edit or Ask modes.

  4. 4

    Verify the connection

In the Copilot Chat input, type # to list available tools. You should see the MusicBrainz tools listed. Try asking: "List my recent MusicBrainz transactions" and Copilot will invoke them automatically.

Common questions about MusicBrainz MCP in VS Code Copilot

Create a `.vscode/mcp.json` file in your project root and commit it to Git. Every developer opening the repo gets immediate access to the database.
Yes. Copilot calls the `get_release` tool to pull the exact barcode and track listing for any album ID. You get the raw data right in your editor.
It eliminates context switching. Instead of keeping a browser tab open to the API docs, Copilot queries the database and injects the live metadata straight into your code.
Yes. Tools like `search_artists` support Lucene query syntax. Copilot can construct complex queries to find exact matches for obscure bands.
The plugin only requests public music entities like release groups, label names, and ISWCs. Your enterprise source code is never transmitted to the external API.
