How to Use the Neon MCP in Cline
Give Cline the ability to spin up Postgres branches, provision roles, and write connection strings directly into your VS Code workspace.
Works with every AI agent you already use
…and any MCP-compatible client
Connect Neon MCP to Cline
Create your Vinkius account to connect Neon to Cline and route execution through our secure gateway. The platform manages server hosting, runtime updates, and security layers. Configuration requires no manual server provisioning.
Instant DB cloning for feature work
The Neon MCP Server equips your VS Code agent with `create_branch` to generate isolated Postgres environments for every feature you build. Cline sees you are starting a new pull request, forks the database state, and gives you a safe sandbox to run destructive migrations. This eliminates the risk of breaking your main schema during active development. Once the branch exists, the agent calls `get_connection_uri` to wire up your local Prisma or Drizzle configuration, letting you test the new tables instantly.
Full workspace provisioning via Cline
Starting a new backend service starts with running `create_project` to deploy a fresh Postgres cluster in your preferred AWS region. Cline handles the entire infrastructure setup, allocating the default branch and deploying the primary compute node without requiring you to open a browser. From there, the agent structures your access controls by executing `create_role` and `create_database`. It generates the required passwords, assigns database ownership, and writes the resulting credentials into your local environment variables.
Dynamic compute routing via MCP
Controlling database access points happens locally using `create_endpoint` to attach read-write or read-only compute to your branches. If you need to test read replica latency, your agent spins up the endpoint and updates your application code to point at the new host address. You retain complete visibility over what is running. Cline can run `list_endpoints` and `list_branches` to audit your active infrastructure, helping you clean up idle compute before you hit project limits.
