Team-Wide Database Management

Add the Neon MCP Server configuration to your `.vscode/mcp.json` file and commit it to your repository. Now every developer on your team gets the same set of tools automatically when they open the project. No individual setup required. An engineer can join the team, pull the repo, and immediately ask Copilot to `create_branch` for their first ticket. This standardizes how your team creates and manages development environments, eliminating "it works on my machine" issues related to database state.

Build and Tear Down Dev Branches

Start work on a new feature by telling Copilot, "Create a new Neon branch from our main branch." It uses `create_branch` to spin up an isolated Postgres environment in seconds. Then ask for the connection string with `get_connection_uri` to configure your local dev server. After your PR is merged, just tell Copilot to clean up. A simple "Delete the Neon branch for ticket-456" is all it takes for the agent to run `delete_branch`. This keeps your project's branch list from getting cluttered with stale environments.

Infrastructure as Natural Language

This isn't just about branches. You can manage your entire Neon setup. Tell Copilot to `create_project` to provision a whole new stack for a microservice. You can also have it `list_roles` or `list_databases` to inspect the configuration of any branch. Need a read-only endpoint for a reporting tool? Just ask your agent to `create_endpoint` with type `read_only` on the production branch. You get a secure, replicated endpoint without clicking through a UI. It's like having a DevOps engineer on call in your editor.

Setup guide

Set up Neon MCP in VS Code Copilot

Prerequisites

  • VS Code 1.99 or later with GitHub Copilot extension
  • Active Vinkius subscription with a valid endpoint token
  1. 1

    Open MCP configuration

Open the Command Palette (Cmd+Shift+P / Ctrl+Shift+P) and run "MCP: Add Server". Select HTTP (Streamable) as the server type. VS Code will create .vscode/mcp.json in your workspace.

  2. 2

    Add the Neon MCP

Paste the JSON snippet shown on the right into your .vscode/mcp.json. Replace [YOUR_TOKEN_HERE] with your endpoint token from cloud.vinkius.com.

  3. 3

    Switch to Agent mode

Open Copilot Chat (Cmd+Shift+I / Ctrl+Shift+I) and switch to Agent mode using the dropdown. MCP tools are only available in Agent mode — they do not appear in Edit or Ask modes.

  4. 4

    Verify the connection

In the Copilot Chat input, type # to list available tools. You should see the Neon tools listed. Try asking: "List my recent Neon transactions" and Copilot will invoke them automatically.

Common questions about Neon MCP in VS Code Copilot

A team lead should add the Neon MCP Server config to a `.vscode/mcp.json` file in the project's root. Once that file is committed to Git, everyone on the team who pulls the repo will have the Neon tools available in Copilot Chat.
No. Vinkius handles authentication. You configure the single, secure MCP Server endpoint in your project's `mcp.json`. All requests from your team's Copilot clients are routed through it, simplifying key management.
The Neon API itself has safeguards. For instance, the `delete_branch` tool cannot delete the project's primary branch. You first have to `set_primary_branch` to a different one, providing a natural safety check.
Just open Copilot Chat and ask, "List all branches for our project." The agent will use the `list_branches` tool and show you a table with each branch's ID, name, parent, and current state.
Yes. The server is strictly for infrastructure management and only processes metadata from the Neon API—things like branch names and endpoint addresses. It has no access to your tables, rows, or any of the data within your database. Communication is secured via the Vinkius platform.
