Key Capabilities

Find clear satellite scenes using Google ADK agents

Your Google ADK agent runs `quick_search` to query the Planet Labs catalog for SkySat and PSScene imagery. This Google ADK workflow filters Planet Labs results by cloud cover and sun elevation so you don't get stuck with cloudy data. The Google ADK agent calls `get_item_details` to verify Planet Labs acquisition conditions before passing the metadata to your BigQuery GIS tables. It's a clean way to keep your enterprise data warehouse populated only with valid Planet Labs spatial records.

Automate continuous feeds via this MCP Server

This MCP Server allows your Google ADK pipeline to execute `create_subscription` to set up automated Planet Labs imagery delivery. Your Google ADK agent directs these continuous Planet Labs data feeds straight to your Google Cloud Storage buckets so there's no manual scheduling required. The Google ADK agent uses `list_subscriptions` to monitor active Planet Labs delivery statuses. If parameters change, the Google ADK agent updates the subscription to keep your Vertex AI models supplied with fresh Planet Labs imagery.

Analyze temporal coverage patterns automatically

Your Google ADK agent connects to this MCP Server to execute `get_search_statistics` to retrieve historical Planet Labs imagery availability histograms. This analysis lets your Google ADK agent calculate seasonal coverage patterns before you commit budget to a new Planet Labs monitoring area. The Google ADK agent queries `list_saved_searches` to manage existing Planet Labs monitoring configurations. It's easy to pull the latest Planet Labs frames matching those historical baselines by running `get_search_results` inside your agent loop.

Setup guide

Set up Planet Labs MCP in Google ADK

Prerequisites

  • Python 3.10+ installed
  • google-adk package (pip install google-adk)
  • Active Vinkius subscription with a valid endpoint token
  1. 1

    Install Google ADK

    Run pip install google-adk to install the Agent Development Kit. MCP support is included via the McpToolset class.

  2. 2

    Connect via SSE transport

    Use McpToolset.from_server() with SseServerParams pointing to your Vinkius endpoint. Replace [YOUR_TOKEN_HERE] with your token from cloud.vinkius.com.

  3. 3

    Create an LlmAgent

    Pass the returned mcp_tools list directly to LlmAgent(tools=mcp_tools). The ADK maps each MCP tool to a native Gemini function call — no manual schema definitions required.

  4. 4

    Run with any Gemini model

    The agent works with any Gemini model (gemini-2.0-flash, gemini-2.5-pro, etc.). Copy the full example on the right to get started with Planet Labs tools in your ADK agent.

agent.py
from google.adk.agents import LlmAgent
from google.adk.tools.mcp_tool.mcp_toolset import McpToolset
from google.adk.tools.mcp_tool.mcp_session_manager import SseServerParams

# Connect to the MCP via SSE
mcp_tools, exit_stack = await McpToolset.from_server(
    connection_params=SseServerParams(
        url="https://edge.vinkius.com/[YOUR_TOKEN_HERE]/mcp"
    )
)

# Create your agent with auto-discovered tools
agent = LlmAgent(
    name="Planet Labs_agent",
    model="gemini-2.0-flash",
    instruction="You have access to Planet Labs tools via MCP.",
    tools=mcp_tools,
)

Common questions about Planet Labs MCP in Google ADK

Initialize the `McpToolset` pointing to the Vinkius HTTP endpoint and pass it to your Google ADK `LlmAgent`. The Google ADK agent automatically discovers Planet Labs tools like `quick_search` and makes them available to Gemini.
Yes, your Google ADK agent can call `get_item_details` to extract Planet Labs coordinate geometries and acquisition times. It then formats this Planet Labs metadata to load directly into your BigQuery spatial tables.
The Google ADK agent invokes `create_saved_search` with SkySat specified in the Planet Labs item types parameter. Your Google ADK workflow then executes `get_search_results` to retrieve high-resolution Planet Labs imagery daily.
Your Google ADK agent should first run `list_asset_types` to check available Planet Labs products like analytic or visual assets. This prevents Google ADK execution errors by validating asset availability before calling `get_item_assets`.
Your Planet Labs search geometries and metadata queries are processed in an ephemeral V8 sandbox on Vinkius. Google ADK only receives the filtered API responses, ensuring your proprietary geographic coordinates remain confidential.
