Key Capabilities

Automating Rate Calculation and Label Generation

You can build a chain that first calls `get_rates` using package dimensions. The output—the list of available rates—becomes the input for your next step, which selects the optimal carrier. Following rate selection, you pass the necessary data to `create_label_for_order` to generate the label. This flow allows your agent to execute a full fulfillment cycle: get rates -> decide carrier -> create label. It's ideal for complex processes where one piece of API data dictates the next action.

Managing Order Lifecycle Statuses

Need to update an entire batch of orders? Your agent can first use `list_orders` to pull a list of relevant order IDs. Then, it iterates through that list, calling `add_tag_to_order` or `remove_tag_from_order` for each one based on predefined logic. This chaining ability lets you perform bulk operations. For example, you can process all orders marked 'Pending' and apply a 'Ready to Ship' tag in a single, controlled sequence.

Setting Up Webhook Triggers

The agent handles system integration by setting up event listening. You call `subscribe_webhook` with specific parameters for an order type or status change. The result of this tool call is the confirmation URL needed to integrate it into a larger data pipeline. Later, if the process needs changing, you can use `unsubscribe_webhook`. This makes your workflow resilient and fully traceable across multiple connected services.

Setup guide

Set up ShipStation MCP in LangChain

Prerequisites

  • Python 3.10+ installed
  • langchain-mcp-adapters + langgraph packages
  • Active Vinkius subscription with a valid endpoint token
  1. 1

    Install dependencies

    Run pip install langchain-mcp-adapters langgraph langchain-openai. The MCP adapters package converts MCP tools into native LangChain BaseTool objects.

  2. 2

    Connect via HTTP transport

    Use MultiServerMCPClient with "transport": "http" pointing to your Vinkius endpoint. Replace [YOUR_TOKEN_HERE] with your token from cloud.vinkius.com.

  3. 3

    Create a ReAct agent

    Pass the discovered tools to create_react_agent() from LangGraph. The agent automatically routes ShipStation tool calls through the MCP protocol.

  4. 4

    Run with any LLM

    Swap ChatOpenAI for ChatAnthropic, ChatGoogleGenerativeAI, or any LangChain-compatible model. The MCP tools work identically across all providers.

agent.py
from langchain_mcp_adapters.client import MultiServerMCPClient
from langgraph.prebuilt import create_react_agent
from langchain_openai import ChatOpenAI

async with MultiServerMCPClient({
    "shipstation-mcp": {
        "transport": "http",
        "url": "https://edge.vinkius.com/[YOUR_TOKEN_HERE]/mcp",
    }
}) as client:
    tools = client.get_tools()

    agent = create_react_agent(
        ChatOpenAI(model="gpt-4o"),
        tools,
    )
    result = await agent.ainvoke({
        "messages": "List recent ShipStation transactions"
    })
    print(result["messages"][-1].content)

Common questions about ShipStation MCP in LangChain

LangChain lets you build a chain where the output of `get_rates`—the cost structure and options—is immediately fed into decision logic. Your agent uses this data to programmatically select the best carrier, minimizing costs while meeting delivery windows.
You can use `list_orders` first to pull a filtered list of order IDs. Then, you feed that list into a loop managed by the chain, calling `add_tag_to_order` for every item in sequence.
Yes. Because it's designed for complex pipelines, you can connect multiple MCP servers together or aggregate tool calls from different sources into a single reasoning path. This gives full visibility across all your shipping resources.
You'd use a chain that first fetches the label details via `list_shipments`, then uses those tracking numbers as inputs for subsequent tools. The whole sequence remains visible in the trace, showing exactly where the process stalled or succeeded.
You can run an agent that first calls `get_carrier` to check balance limits. It then uses this data to decide if it must call `add_funds` before attempting any label creation or order listing.
