Key Capabilities

Real-Time Departures

Need to know when the next bus or train runs? Use `get_live_bus_departures` and `get_live_train_departures` to fetch current departure details, including destinations and operators. You can also use `get_nearby_bus_stops` if you only have a GPS coordinate. This lets your agent locate the nearest stop before it even plans the route.

Journey Planning

The core function is `plan_public_transport_journey`. Pass two locations, and the MCP Server returns a full, step-by-step itinerary showing times and required changes. It's not just about getting from A to B. You can also use `get_transport_by_postcode` when the user only provides a UK postcode instead of precise coordinates.

Fares and Timetables

For pricing, call `get_train_fares` to compare ticket costs between two stations. This is perfect for building comparison tools. Want the full schedule? Use `get_train_station_timetable` or check out bus schedules with `get_bus_route_timetable`. The MCP Server handles all these scheduling details.

Setup guide

Set up TransportAPI MCP in OpenAI Agents SDK

Prerequisites

  • Python 3.10+ installed
  • openai-agents package (pip install openai-agents)
  • Active Vinkius subscription with a valid endpoint token
  1. 1

    Install the SDK

    Run pip install openai-agents to install the OpenAI Agents SDK. The MCP integration is built-in — no extra dependencies needed.

  2. 2

    Connect via SSE transport

    Use MCPServerSse with your Vinkius endpoint URL. Replace [YOUR_TOKEN_HERE] with your token from cloud.vinkius.com. The SDK auto-discovers all TransportAPI tools at runtime.

  3. 3

    Create your Agent

    Pass the MCP to Agent(mcp_servers=[server]). The agent receives TransportAPI tools as native definitions — JSON schemas resolve automatically.

  4. 4

    Run the agent

    Call Runner.run(agent, prompt) to execute. The agent invokes the appropriate TransportAPI tools and returns structured results. Copy the full example on the right to get started.

agent.py
import asyncio
from agents import Agent, Runner
from agents.mcp import MCPServerSse

async def main():
    async with MCPServerSse(
        url="https://edge.vinkius.com/[YOUR_TOKEN_HERE]/mcp"
    ) as server:
        agent = Agent(
            name="TransportAPI Agent",
            instructions="You have access to TransportAPI tools.",
            mcp_servers=[server],
        )
        result = await Runner.run(agent, "List recent transactions")
        print(result.final_output)

asyncio.run(main())

Common questions about TransportAPI MCP in OpenAI Agents SDK

Your agent calls the `plan_public_transport_journey` tool. You pass the start and end points, and the MCP Server returns a detailed itinerary with step-by-step instructions. It handles all necessary transfers automatically.
Yep. Use `get_train_fares` to compare ticket prices between any two specified stations. This tool is designed specifically for price comparison within the UK network.
This MCP Server primarily touches location data, including GPS coordinates and UK postcodes. It handles general public transport planning data to build your agent's logic.
Absolutely. If a user only provides a name like 'Paddington', you can use `search_transport_places` to locate the correct station ID before planning anything else.
You've got tools for that. Call `get_bus_service` to get route details or use `get_bus_route_timetable` for the scheduled timetable of a specific line.
