Guaranteed Correct Data

Pydantic AI's main job is to ensure correctness. When your agent calls a tool like `get_note` or `get_task`, the response from the Amplenote API is immediately validated against a Pydantic model. You get exactly the data structure you expect. If the API ever returns something unexpected — a missing field, a wrong data type — your agent will raise a `ValidationError` immediately. This prevents silent data corruption down the line. You'll know the instant something is wrong, which is crucial for building reliable systems.

Manage Notes and Tasks Safely

Your agent can confidently manage your knowledge base. When it uses `create_note` or `create_task`, Pydantic AI ensures the arguments it sends match the required schema. This prevents malformed requests from ever reaching the server. The same applies to updates. When using `update_note` or `update_task`, your agent builds a Pydantic model of the changes first. This gives you a structured, predictable way to modify your Amplenote data without worrying about sending invalid payloads.

Model-Agnostic Amplenote MCP Server

This Amplenote MCP Server works with any LLM you want to use. Pydantic AI is model-agnostic, so you can plug in models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, or even a local one. The tools, like `search_notes` and `list_tags`, will work the same way regardless of the brain powering your agent. This frees you from being locked into a single provider. You can switch models based on cost, performance, or features without having to rewrite any of your tool-using logic. The Pydantic AI framework and this MCP server provide the stable foundation.

Setup guide

Set up Amplenote MCP in Pydantic AI

Prerequisites

  • Python 3.10+ installed
  • pydantic-ai-slim[fastmcp] package
  • Active Vinkius subscription with a valid endpoint token
  1. 1

    Install Pydantic AI with FastMCP

    Run pip install "pydantic-ai-slim[fastmcp]". The FastMCP toolset replaces the deprecated MCPServerHTTP class with full protocol support.

  2. 2

    Configure the FastMCPToolset

    Pass a JSON-style config dict to FastMCPToolset with your Vinkius URL. Replace [YOUR_TOKEN_HERE] with your token from cloud.vinkius.com. Supports Streamable HTTP, SSE, and Stdio transports.

  3. 3

    Create and run your agent

    Pass the toolset to Agent(toolsets=[toolset]) and call agent.run(). Swap openai:gpt-4o for any supported model — Anthropic, Google, Mistral, or Groq.

agent.py
from pydantic_ai import Agent
from pydantic_ai.toolsets.fastmcp import FastMCPToolset

toolset = FastMCPToolset({
    "mcpServers": {
        "amplenote-mcp": {
            "url": "https://edge.vinkius.com/[YOUR_TOKEN_HERE]/mcp"
        }
    }
})

agent = Agent(
    "openai:gpt-4o",
    toolsets=[toolset],
    system_prompt="You have access to Amplenote tools.",
)

result = await agent.run("List recent Amplenote transactions")
print(result.output)

Common questions about Amplenote MCP in Pydantic AI

When your agent uses a tool like `get_note`, Pydantic AI validates the JSON response from the server against a predefined Pydantic model. If the data doesn't match the expected structure, it throws an error instead of letting your agent use bad data.
Your agent will fail loudly with a `ValidationError`. This is a feature, not a bug. It prevents your agent from operating on unexpected data, protecting your workflow from silent corruption until you can update your models.
After you `pip install "pydantic-ai-slim[mcp]"`, you create an `MCPToolset` instance with your Vinkius server URL. Then you just pass that toolset to your `Agent`'s `toolsets` parameter.
Yes. Pydantic AI is model-agnostic. You can configure it to use any LLM that has a compatible interface, including models running locally on your own machine, to interact with the Amplenote tools.
This server is designed to access only your Amplenote notes and tasks. It never handles your login credentials. All communication is secured via a short-lived Vinkius token, and the server itself runs in a sandboxed environment that is immediately destroyed after your request is complete.
