Fetch shared engineering specs

The Bear MCP Server enables VS Code Copilot to fetch shared engineering specs via `search_notes` and `open_note`. A new hire asks Copilot about the database schema, and the agent pulls the exact markdown from the team's knowledge base. Teams stop answering the same questions in Slack. The editor reads the canonical requirements straight from Bear and injects that context right into the developer's chat window.

Update docs via VS Code Copilot and MCP

Pushing meeting notes and PR summaries back to the team happens instantly when the agent fires `create_note` or `add_text`. You finish a sprint, and Copilot drafts the retrospective natively in your shared workspace. Keeping the shared repository clean is handled through `archive_note` and `trash_note`. The agent moves outdated feature specs out of the way so developers only see current documentation.

Global tag synchronization

Reorganizing your team's internal wikis takes one prompt because Copilot uses this MCP Server to execute `list_tags` and `rename_tag`. The agent maps the parent-child relationships and updates category names globally across all notes. Dropping obsolete tracking tags happens instantly through `delete_tag`. You instruct the agent to remove last quarter's sprint labels, and it destroys that constraint across the entire mapped system.

Setup guide

Set up Bear MCP in VS Code Copilot

Prerequisites

  • VS Code 1.99 or later with GitHub Copilot extension
  • Active Vinkius subscription with a valid endpoint token
  1. 1

    Open MCP configuration

Open the Command Palette (Cmd+Shift+P / Ctrl+Shift+P) and run "MCP: Add Server". Select HTTP (Streamable) as the server type. VS Code will create .vscode/mcp.json in your workspace.

  2. 2

    Add the Bear MCP

Paste the JSON snippet shown on the right into your .vscode/mcp.json. Replace [YOUR_TOKEN_HERE] with your endpoint token from cloud.vinkius.com.

  3. 3

    Switch to Agent mode

Open Copilot Chat (Cmd+Shift+I / Ctrl+Shift+I) and switch to Agent mode using the dropdown. MCP tools are only available in Agent mode — they do not appear in Edit or Ask modes.

  4. 4

    Verify the connection

In the Copilot Chat input, type # to list available tools. You should see the Bear tools listed. Try asking: "List my recent Bear transactions" and Copilot will invoke them automatically.

Common questions about Bear MCP in VS Code Copilot

Commit a `.vscode/mcp.json` file to your Git repository. Every developer gets immediate access to the same tools once they pull the branch.
The agent executes the tag-listing tool to find precise matches. It navigates your entire nested hierarchy to locate the right documents.
The integration relies on the server endpoint to execute commands. It appends text or creates new files based on your chat instructions.
You need version 1.96 or higher. Agent mode must also be active in your chat panel for the tools to function.
Your internal markdown documentation passes through a strict zero-trust boundary. Vinkius handles the authorization securely, meaning your proprietary architecture specs are never stored persistently after the request finishes.
