Index Clio case histories into LlamaIndex vector stores

The Clio MCP Server indexes raw legal data into LlamaIndex vector stores for semantic search. Your agent queries `list_matters` and `list_notes`, then indexes those case histories to answer complex questions about past legal strategies. Instead of searching keywords, you ask semantic questions about how previous cases were resolved. This setup combines real-time API tools with historical context. When a user asks about a client, the agent pulls fresh data using `get_contact` while simultaneously querying the vector index to find related historical records.

Build RAG engines for legal billing and invoices

This Clio MCP Server turns your financial records into a queryable knowledge base within LlamaIndex. By indexing outputs from `list_bills` and `get_bill`, your LlamaIndex pipelines analyze revenue trends and outstanding balances. You ask your agent to find patterns in unpaid bills without writing complex SQL queries. The agent uses `list_activities` to pull time entries, matches them against active invoices, and provides a clear summary of your firm's financial status. It makes financial reporting as simple as asking a question in plain English.

Search across case documents and calendar deadlines

The Clio MCP Server lets LlamaIndex run unified searches across different data types. Your agent pulls files via `list_documents` and matches them against court dates retrieved from `list_calendar_entries`. This ensures you never miss a critical filing deadline. If a deadline is approaching, the agent searches past case notes using `list_notes` to gather all relevant context. It builds a complete picture of the case, helping you prepare for hearings much faster.

Setup guide

Set up Clio MCP in LlamaIndex

Prerequisites

  • Python 3.10+ installed
  • llama-index-tools-mcp package
  • Active Vinkius subscription with a valid endpoint token
  1. 1

    Install dependencies

    Run pip install llama-index-tools-mcp llama-index-llms-openai. The MCP tools package provides BasicMCPClient and McpToolSpec.

  2. 2

    Connect with BasicMCPClient

    Point BasicMCPClient to your Vinkius endpoint URL. Replace [YOUR_TOKEN_HERE] with your token from cloud.vinkius.com. Supports SSE and Streamable HTTP transports.

  3. 3

    Convert to LlamaIndex tools

    Call mcp_tool_spec.to_tool_list_async() to convert all Clio MCP tools into native FunctionTool objects that any LlamaIndex agent can use.

  4. 4

    Run with any LLM

    Create a FunctionAgent with the tools and your preferred LLM. Swap OpenAI for Anthropic, Gemini, or any LlamaIndex-supported provider.

agent.py
from llama_index.tools.mcp import BasicMCPClient, McpToolSpec
from llama_index.core.agent.workflow import FunctionAgent
from llama_index.llms.openai import OpenAI

# Connect to the MCP
mcp_client = BasicMCPClient(
    "https://edge.vinkius.com/[YOUR_TOKEN_HERE]/mcp"
)
mcp_tool_spec = McpToolSpec(client=mcp_client)

# Convert MCP tools to LlamaIndex tools
tools = await mcp_tool_spec.to_tool_list_async()

# Create and run the agent
agent = FunctionAgent(
    tools=tools,
    llm=OpenAI(model="gpt-4o"),
    system_prompt="You have access to Clio tools.",
)
response = await agent.run("List recent Clio data")

Common questions about Clio MCP in LlamaIndex

Install `llama-index-tools-mcp` and instantiate `BasicMCPClient` pointing to your Clio server URL. Wrap it in `McpToolSpec` and convert it to a tool list that your LlamaIndex agent can call during query execution.
Yes. LlamaIndex can run `list_notes` to fetch all historical notes, index them into a vector database, and perform semantic search to find specific legal arguments or research.
The server runs inside an ephemeral, zero-trust sandbox, ensuring that your billing records and contact details are processed locally. Your sensitive financial data is never stored on external servers or used to train public models.
Yes, you can query `list_calendar_entries` and `list_tasks` to retrieve upcoming court dates and index them to present a structured timeline of your legal schedule.
Yes, Vinkius handles authentication securely. Your credentials are used solely to sign the requests to Clio and are never exposed to the LLM or stored in the vector index.
