OpenAI agents need strict guardrails when touching client case files. You map out specialized agents for intake and billing, and they auto-discover tools like `search_matters` and `get_contact`. The SDK validates every action before execution so your system never hallucinates a fake case number. Handoffs work naturally here. An intake agent runs `create_contact` to log a new client, then passes the context to a case agent that calls `create_matter` to open the file. You track the whole chain directly in the OpenAI dashboard.

Automate time tracking and billing

Lawyers hate logging their time. You build a background agent that reads their daily emails and calendar, then triggers `create_activity` to post exact seconds against specific matters. It handles expense entries the exact same way. Revenue tracking happens without manual data entry. Your billing agent pulls `list_bills` to find outstanding receivables and checks `get_bill` for line-item details. Tracing lets you see exactly how the model calculated the totals.

Track court deadlines

Missing a filing date ruins a case. Your agent pulls schedule data using `list_calendar_entries` and checks for upcoming court dates. It then calls `create_task` to assign preparation work to specific attorneys. Team management gets easier when the agent knows who handles what. It reads `list_users` to find available staff and checks `list_practice_areas` to assign the right specialist. You set `cacheToolsList=True` so the agent runs these checks instantly.

Setup guide

Set up Clio MCP in OpenAI Agents SDK

Prerequisites

  • Python 3.10+ installed
  • openai-agents package (pip install openai-agents)
  • Active Vinkius subscription with a valid endpoint token
  1. 1

    Install the SDK

    Run pip install openai-agents to install the OpenAI Agents SDK. The MCP integration is built-in — no extra dependencies needed.

  2. 2

    Connect via SSE transport

    Use MCPServerSse with your Vinkius endpoint URL. Replace [YOUR_TOKEN_HERE] with your token from cloud.vinkius.com. The SDK auto-discovers all Clio tools at runtime.

  3. 3

    Create your Agent

    Pass the MCP to Agent(mcp_servers=[server]). The agent receives Clio tools as native definitions — JSON schemas resolve automatically.

  4. 4

    Run the agent

    Call Runner.run(agent, prompt) to execute. The agent invokes the appropriate Clio tools and returns structured results. Copy the full example on the right to get started.

agent.py
import asyncio
from agents import Agent, Runner
from agents.mcp import MCPServerSse

async def main():
    async with MCPServerSse(
        url="https://edge.vinkius.com/[YOUR_TOKEN_HERE]/mcp"
    ) as server:
        agent = Agent(
            name="Clio Agent",
            instructions="You have access to Clio tools.",
            mcp_servers=[server],
        )
        result = await Runner.run(agent, "List recent transactions")
        print(result.final_output)

asyncio.run(main())

Common questions about Clio MCP in OpenAI Agents SDK

Install the package with `pip install openai-agents`. Initialize `MCPServerStreamableHttp` with your Vinkius endpoint token. Pass that to the Agent constructor using the `mcp_servers` array.
Yes. The agent uses the `create_activity` tool to post time entries. You provide the date, duration in seconds, and specify if it is a TimeEntry or ExpenseEntry.
Tools load automatically with zero configuration. The agent reads the schemas for `list_matters` and `search_matters` to find cases based on client names or keywords.
You just pass multiple endpoints to your server array. The agent will hand off tasks between your legal database and other internal tools.
Vinkius runs your environment in an ephemeral V8 Isolate Sandbox. Your client pulls sensitive court documents and attorney-client communications via `list_documents` over a zero-trust connection. Auth requires a single endpoint token, and the session dies when the task finishes.
