Debate ecological findings with multiple agents

Set up a team of AutoGen agents to analyze biodiversity records from the GBIF database. One agent can run `get_gbif_occurrences` while another validates the coordinate data. They challenge each other's assumptions about species presence. This deliberation ensures your final report is based on consensus rather than a single, potentially biased, data point.

Resolve taxonomic uncertainty through conversation

Use `search_gbif_species` to provide your agents with the latest taxonomic data. When agents disagree on a species classification, they can query the server to settle the debate. This process mimics a scientific review. The agents negotiate based on the facts returned by the tools, leading to a more reliable output for your project.

Automate complex biodiversity assessments

Deploy an AutoGen system where agents work together to map biodiversity hotspots. They use `get_gbif_species` to identify species and then group them by ecological significance. Your agents handle the heavy lifting of coordinating these tool calls. You just set the goal, and the team negotiates the best way to extract the necessary information.

Setup guide

Set up GBIF MCP in AutoGen

Prerequisites

  • Python 3.10+ installed
  • autogen-ext[mcp] package
  • Active Vinkius subscription with a valid endpoint token
  1. 1

    Install AutoGen with MCP

    Run pip install "autogen-ext[mcp]" autogen-agentchat. The MCP extension includes mcp_server_tools for stateless tool access.

  2. 2

    Fetch tools from the MCP

    Call mcp_server_tools(SseServerParams(url=...)) with your Vinkius endpoint. Replace [YOUR_TOKEN_HERE] with your token from cloud.vinkius.com.

  3. 3

    Run your agent

    Pass the tools to AssistantAgent and call agent.run(). The agent invokes GBIF tools and returns structured results.

agent.py
from autogen_ext.tools.mcp import SseServerParams, mcp_server_tools
from autogen_agentchat.agents import AssistantAgent
from autogen_ext.models.openai import OpenAIChatCompletionClient

server_params = SseServerParams(
    url="https://edge.vinkius.com/[YOUR_TOKEN_HERE]/mcp"
)

tools = await mcp_server_tools(server_params)

agent = AssistantAgent(
    name="GBIF_assistant",
    model_client=OpenAIChatCompletionClient(model="gpt-4o"),
    tools=tools,
)

result = await agent.run("List recent GBIF data")
print(result.messages[-1].content)

Common questions about GBIF MCP in AutoGen

Use the MCP tool adapter to convert the server tools into a format your agents can read. You then pass this list to your agent constructors.
Yes, they can share the tool results and debate their meaning. This allows your team of agents to cross-reference data from multiple queries.
The server supports streamable HTTP, which fits perfectly with how AutoGen handles agent communication and task execution.
The MCP server handles the connection state. Your agents just request the data, and the server returns the results for the current conversation.
The server uses a zero-trust model. Your raw biodiversity queries are processed securely, ensuring no sensitive project data leaks during the agent debate.
