How to Use the IBM Quantum MCP in Windsurf
Run quantum circuits directly from Windsurf. Let Cascade manage your job lifecycle, backend selection, and data analysis.
Works with every AI agent you already use
…and any MCP-compatible client
Connect IBM Quantum MCP to Windsurf
Create your Vinkius account to connect IBM Quantum to Windsurf and route execution through our secure gateway. The platform manages server hosting, runtime updates, and security layers. Configuration requires no manual server provisioning.
Automate circuit execution in Windsurf
Cascade doesn't wait for you to fetch data. It uses `list_backends` to find the right hardware and `submit_job` to push your code to the queue. Once the job hits the hardware, it handles the polling logic. It waits for the status to change and pulls the final output for your review.
Monitor quantum jobs across your project
You don't need to leave your workspace to check on progress. The agent triggers `list_jobs` to show you everything currently running or finished. If a circuit is stuck or you need to clear the queue, it calls `cancel_job` instantly. This keeps your compute budget under control while you iterate.
Deep dive into backend performance
Getting the right hardware matters for fidelity. This MCP server lets you run `get_backend_details` to verify if a system supports your specific gates. It compares specs before you spend your credits. This ensures you aren't wasting time on hardware that can't handle your circuit depth.
Set up IBM Quantum MCP in Windsurf
Prerequisites
- Windsurf IDE installed (macOS, Windows, or Linux)
- Active Vinkius subscription with a valid endpoint token
- 1
Open MCP configuration
Click the Cascade assistant icon in the sidebar, then click the hammer icon (🔨) at the top of the panel. Select "Configure" to open
~/.codeium/windsurf/mcp_config.json. - 2
Add the IBM Quantum MCP
Paste the JSON snippet shown on the right into the
mcpServersobject. Replace[YOUR_TOKEN_HERE]with your endpoint token from cloud.vinkius.com. - 3
Refresh MCPs
Go back to the hammer icon (🔨) in Cascade and click "Refresh". Windsurf will detect the new server. No full restart is needed — the connection is hot-reloaded.
- 4
Verify in Cascade
Start a new Cascade conversation and ask something like "Show my IBM Quantum payment history." If connected, Cascade will call the IBM Quantum tools directly. You will see a green dot next to the server name in the MCP panel.
