Turn Live Fax Metadata into Searchable Indices

Stop digging through paper logs or cluttered dashboards. Your LlamaIndex agent uses `list_faxes` to pull historical transmission records and immediately indexes them into a local vector store. This creates a searchable knowledge base of all sent documents that your agent can query instantly. Instead of running manual database lookups, you ask your agent which documents failed last Tuesday. The model queries the vector index, matches the semantic context, and finds the exact records without hallucinating.

Semantic RAG Pipelines for Document Downloads

When your LlamaIndex agent executes `download_fax`, it retrieves raw document payloads to feed directly into your retrieval-augmented generation index. LlamaIndex ingests these files, parses the text, and stores the chunks in your document index. This links your live transmission pipeline directly to your retrieval-augmented generation workflows. You can then query the actual content of received faxes using natural language. The agent retrieves the relevant chunks from the vector store, ensuring its answers are grounded in the actual documents you received.

Grounded Status Tracking with MCP Server Tools

Hallucinations are a major risk when dealing with delivery statuses. By exposing `get_fax_status` as an MCP tool, LlamaIndex forces the model to fetch real-time API data before answering questions about delivery. If a transmission is stuck, the agent checks the live status and updates its internal index. This guarantees that any status reports generated by your agent are based on actual API responses rather than guesswork.

Setup guide

Set up iFax MCP in LlamaIndex

Prerequisites

  • Python 3.10+ installed
  • llama-index-tools-mcp package
  • Active Vinkius subscription with a valid endpoint token
  1. 1

    Install dependencies

    Run pip install llama-index-tools-mcp llama-index-llms-openai. The MCP tools package provides BasicMCPClient and McpToolSpec.

  2. 2

    Connect with BasicMCPClient

    Point BasicMCPClient to your Vinkius endpoint URL. Replace [YOUR_TOKEN_HERE] with your token from cloud.vinkius.com. Supports SSE and Streamable HTTP transports.

  3. 3

    Convert to LlamaIndex tools

    Call mcp_tool_spec.to_tool_list_async() to convert all iFax MCP tools into native FunctionTool objects that any LlamaIndex agent can use.

  4. 4

    Run with any LLM

    Create a FunctionAgent with the tools and your preferred LLM. Swap OpenAI for Anthropic, Gemini, or any LlamaIndex-supported provider.

agent.py
from llama_index.tools.mcp import BasicMCPClient, McpToolSpec
from llama_index.core.agent.workflow import FunctionAgent
from llama_index.llms.openai import OpenAI

# Connect to the MCP
mcp_client = BasicMCPClient(
    "https://edge.vinkius.com/[YOUR_TOKEN_HERE]/mcp"
)
mcp_tool_spec = McpToolSpec(client=mcp_client)

# Convert MCP tools to LlamaIndex tools
tools = await mcp_tool_spec.to_tool_list_async()

# Create and run the agent
agent = FunctionAgent(
    tools=tools,
    llm=OpenAI(model="gpt-4o"),
    system_prompt="You have access to iFax tools.",
)
response = await agent.run("List recent iFax data")

Common questions about iFax MCP in LlamaIndex

Install `llama-index-tools-mcp` and initialize the `BasicMCPClient` with your Vinkius endpoint. Wrap it in a `McpToolSpec` to register tools like `send_fax` and `list_faxes` directly into your agent's tool pool.
Yes. When your agent calls `download_fax`, the resulting document can be passed directly to a LlamaIndex reader. The parsed text is then chunked and added to your vector index for semantic search.
By forcing the LlamaIndex agent to call `get_fax_status` before answering, the model relies on live API data. The retrieved status is fed directly into the response context, preventing the model from guessing delivery states.
You can use the `allowed_tools` filter in the tool specification to limit exposure. For example, you can expose `get_fax_status` while blocking destructive tools like `cancel_fax` for read-only agents.
Transmission metadata and base64 payloads pass through an ephemeral, zero-trust V8 sandbox. Vinkius does not log or retain the contents of your PDFs, ensuring your document vectors remain completely private within your local index.
