Key Capabilities

Automate raw JSON to PDF rendering

The `generate_pdf` tool lets your agent send structured JSON payloads straight to your templates. Your OpenAI Agents SDK pipeline hands off raw data directly to the document builder, avoiding manual HTML compilation altogether. Once triggered, use `check_pdf_status` to monitor the asynchronous build progress. This keeps your Python agent execution thread light while the server handles the CPU-heavy layout processing.

Manage templates via OpenAI Agents SDK

The `list_templates` tool lets your agent inspect active layout structures directly from your Python runtime. Instead of hardcoding template IDs, your agent queries the MCP server dynamically to select the correct design. After selecting a template, the agent calls `get_template` to pull down specific schema requirements. This ensures the payload matches the design structure before triggering a build.

Track and update document lifecycles

The `list_generated_documents` tool allows your agent to audit what has already been built. If an invoice needs correction, the agent triggers `update_document` to modify metadata or `regenerate_document` to rebuild the file. For storage cleanup, the agent invokes `delete_generated_pdf` to purge old documents. This keeps your storage footprint within limits while maintaining a clean generation log.

Setup guide

Set up PDFMonkey MCP in OpenAI Agents SDK

Prerequisites

  • Python 3.10+ installed
  • openai-agents package (pip install openai-agents)
  • Active Vinkius subscription with a valid endpoint token
  1. 1

    Install the SDK

    Run pip install openai-agents to install the OpenAI Agents SDK. The MCP integration is built-in — no extra dependencies needed.

  2. 2

    Connect via SSE transport

    Use MCPServerSse with your Vinkius endpoint URL. Replace [YOUR_TOKEN_HERE] with your token from cloud.vinkius.com. The SDK auto-discovers all PDFMonkey tools at runtime.

  3. 3

    Create your Agent

    Pass the MCP to Agent(mcp_servers=[server]). The agent receives PDFMonkey tools as native definitions — JSON schemas resolve automatically.

  4. 4

    Run the agent

    Call Runner.run(agent, prompt) to execute. The agent invokes the appropriate PDFMonkey tools and returns structured results. Copy the full example on the right to get started.

agent.py
import asyncio
from agents import Agent, Runner
from agents.mcp import MCPServerSse

async def main():
    async with MCPServerSse(
        url="https://edge.vinkius.com/[YOUR_TOKEN_HERE]/mcp"
    ) as server:
        agent = Agent(
            name="PDFMonkey Agent",
            instructions="You have access to PDFMonkey tools.",
            mcp_servers=[server],
        )
        result = await Runner.run(agent, "List recent transactions")
        print(result.final_output)

asyncio.run(main())

Common questions about PDFMonkey MCP in OpenAI Agents SDK

Install openai-agents, then instantiate MCPServerStreamableHttp pointing to your endpoint URL. Pass this instance in the mcp_servers list when constructing your agent to discover the document tools.
Yes. Because `generate_pdf` is asynchronous, your agent triggers the build and immediately moves to other tasks. It can poll `check_pdf_status` later without blocking the main agent execution loop.
Your agent uses `list_workspaces` to discover available environments, then targets specific ones using `get_workspace`. This lets your agent route document generation to the correct team environment.
Yes, use `get_pdf_details` once the generation status is marked as success. This tool returns the direct download URL for the generated document.
All JSON payloads and document templates are processed inside an isolated V8 sandbox on Vinkius. Ephemeral execution ensures your generation keys and customer payload data are wiped from memory the moment the API call completes.
