Real-time Nest device discovery

Visualize your smart home hierarchy by calling `list_structures` and `list_rooms` directly within your edge functions. You get an immediate map of every connected device without waiting for backend polling loops. Parsing the output of `list_devices` allows your frontend to render custom controls for every thermostat or camera. It keeps your UI state in sync with your physical hardware state.

Instant thermostat state control

Trigger climate adjustments like `set_thermostat_heat` or `set_thermostat_cool` with a single command from your component. The AI SDK handles the tool invocation and returns the confirmation status before the user finishes their next sentence. Managing comfort ranges is handled through `set_thermostat_range` for dual-mode systems. You can expose these controls to your users as interactive sliders that push updates to the Nest API instantly.

Live camera stream management

Initialize a feed using `generate_camera_stream` to display video directly in your application. The stream token is transient, so ensure your cleanup logic triggers `stop_camera_stream` once the component unmounts. This workflow prevents dangling sessions that waste API quota. Your application handles the lifecycle of the video feed, keeping the connection active only while the user is actively watching.

Setup guide

Set up Google Home MCP in Vercel AI SDK

Prerequisites

  • Node.js 18+ and a TypeScript project
  • ai + @modelcontextprotocol/sdk packages
  • Active Vinkius subscription with a valid endpoint token
  1. 1

    Install dependencies

    Run npm install ai @modelcontextprotocol/sdk plus your preferred model provider (e.g. @ai-sdk/openai).

  2. 2

    Create the Streamable HTTP transport

    Use StreamableHTTPClientTransport with your Vinkius endpoint URL. Replace [YOUR_TOKEN_HERE] with your token from cloud.vinkius.com.

  3. 3

    Discover and use tools

    Call mcpClient.tools() to auto-discover all Google Home tools. Pass them directly to generateText() or streamText() — no manual schema definitions needed.

  4. 4

    Works with any model provider

    Swap openai("gpt-4o") for any AI SDK provider — Anthropic, Google, Mistral. The MCP tools work identically across all supported models.

index.ts
import { experimental_createMCPClient as createMCPClient } from "ai";
import { StreamableHTTPClientTransport } from "@modelcontextprotocol/sdk/client/streamableHttp";
import { generateText } from "ai";
import { openai } from "@ai-sdk/openai";

const transport = new StreamableHTTPClientTransport(
  new URL("https://edge.vinkius.com/[YOUR_TOKEN_HERE]/mcp")
);

const mcpClient = await createMCPClient({ transport });
const tools = await mcpClient.tools();

const { text } = await generateText({
  model: openai("gpt-4o"),
  tools,
  prompt: "List recent Google Home transactions",
});

console.log(text);
await mcpClient.close();

Common questions about Google Home MCP in Vercel AI SDK

Install the MCP package and point the transport to your Vinkius endpoint. Use the `createMCPClient` method to initialize the connection and pass the tool set into your `streamText` function.
Yes. You call `list_structures` to identify all homes associated with your account. Once you have the structure ID, you can filter devices by room or location.
Your camera stream tokens are ephemeral and generated per request. We never store video data; the AI SDK simply acts as a secure conduit between the Nest API and your frontend.
Certainly. You invoke `set_fan_timer` with your specific duration parameters to manage air circulation. The tool executes the command and returns the current fan status immediately.
You provide an auth provider during client initialization to handle the OAuth flow. This ensures your connection to the Nest API remains authenticated while your agent performs tasks.
