Start and Stop Timers Safely

Your agent can now manage time entries in Clockify for your team. Use `add_new_time_entry` to log work on a project and `stop_current_timer` when a task is done. It's a straightforward way to automate time tracking without leaving your workflow. The OpenAI SDK's built-in guardrails mean you can review and approve these actions before they execute. This prevents your agent from accidentally starting a timer on the wrong project or stopping one prematurely. You get full visibility and control over what's happening.

Audit Team Hours with Your MCP Server

Give your agent the tools to pull reports from Clockify. It can `list_user_time_entries` for anyone on the team and cross-reference that with data from `list_workspace_projects`. This helps you quickly check who worked on what, and for how long. Because every action is logged in the OpenAI dashboard, you have a complete audit trail. You'll see exactly which tools the agent used and what data it pulled, making it easy to debug or verify the agent's findings.

Map Out Your Entire Workspace

Your agent can build a complete picture of your Clockify setup. It starts by finding the right context with `list_clockify_workspaces`, then drills down into who's on the team with `list_workspace_users` and who you're billing with `list_workspace_clients`. This is great for building specialized agents. One agent could handle project assignments, while another focuses on client billing prep. The SDK's handoff features let them work together, each using the specific Clockify data they need.

Setup guide

Set up Clockify MCP in OpenAI Agents SDK

Prerequisites

  • Python 3.10+ installed
  • openai-agents package (pip install openai-agents)
  • Active Vinkius subscription with a valid endpoint token
  1. 1

    Install the SDK

    Run pip install openai-agents to install the OpenAI Agents SDK. The MCP integration is built-in — no extra dependencies needed.

  2. 2

    Connect via SSE transport

    Use MCPServerSse with your Vinkius endpoint URL. Replace [YOUR_TOKEN_HERE] with your token from cloud.vinkius.com. The SDK auto-discovers all Clockify tools at runtime.

  3. 3

    Create your Agent

    Pass the MCP to Agent(mcp_servers=[server]). The agent receives Clockify tools as native definitions — JSON schemas resolve automatically.

  4. 4

    Run the agent

    Call Runner.run(agent, prompt) to execute. The agent invokes the appropriate Clockify tools and returns structured results. Copy the full example on the right to get started.

agent.py
import asyncio
from agents import Agent, Runner
from agents.mcp import MCPServerSse

async def main():
    async with MCPServerSse(
        url="https://edge.vinkius.com/[YOUR_TOKEN_HERE]/mcp"
    ) as server:
        agent = Agent(
            name="Clockify Agent",
            instructions="You have access to Clockify tools.",
            mcp_servers=[server],
        )
        result = await Runner.run(agent, "List recent transactions")
        print(result.final_output)

asyncio.run(main())

Common questions about Clockify MCP in OpenAI Agents SDK

It connects through this Vinkius-hosted MCP Server. You just install the `openai-agents` SDK, point it to the server URL Vinkius gives you, and the tools are discovered automatically. No manual API client to build.
Yes, the OpenAI Agents SDK lets you define which tools are available to an agent during initialization. You could create an agent that can only read data using `list_...` tools and another that can modify it with `add_new_time_entry`.
The biggest advantage is safety. The SDK's guardrails let you confirm agent actions before they run, and the tracing dashboard gives you a clear record. It's built for production use cases where mistakes with time tracking aren't an option.
Clockify itself only allows one timer running per user at a time. Your agent can use `stop_current_timer` before using `add_new_time_entry` with a start time to switch tasks.
Your Clockify time entries, project lists, and user data are only passed through this server when your agent makes a request. Vinkius uses ephemeral, sandboxed environments for each request, and your authentication token is encrypted. The server doesn't store your data.
