Key Capabilities

Compare rates for CI/CD jobs

You can pipe the output of `get_shipping_rates` directly into a shell script. This is perfect for pre-flight checks, letting your pipeline validate cost estimates before deployment. Run this command in a GitHub Action to compare live pricing across zones. The result can then be used by subsequent scripts, making it ideal for automated build verification.

Generate and manage labels via scripts

Use `create_shipping_label` within your shell script to generate required PDF assets. You'll pipe the resulting label ID into a database update command. Don't forget to track the result metadata using `get_label_info`. This allows your terminal script to log not just that a label was created, but *when* and *for what specific shipment object*.

Validate addresses in automation scripts

Before any packaging process runs, run `validate_address` as the first step in your pipeline. This ensures all destination data is clean before it hits the carrier APIs. If the validation fails (e.g., invalid ZIP code), your script can exit immediately with a specific error code, stopping the build and preventing costly API calls to bad addresses.

Common questions about ShipEngine MCP in Claude Code

You run the `get_shipping_rates` tool command directly in your terminal. You can format its JSON output and pipe it straight into a filtering script to extract only the minimum costs for specific carriers.
Yes, use `create_shipping_label` in your CI/CD flow. The server returns necessary metadata that you can capture and log alongside the resulting file path for audit purposes.
Use `track_package` in a simple loop within your script. You'll pass multiple tracking numbers and use standard Unix tools like `grep` or `awk` to parse the status updates for quick reporting.
The `list_shipments` tool lets you retrieve records. You can run this command and then pipe the list into a CSV formatter to generate a report file for your operations team.
The server handles address components (street, city, zip) and shipment metadata like weights. The `validate_address` tool specifically processes this structured location data.
