Key Capabilities

Multi-Step Note Management

The `list_notes` tool lets your agent pull a list of all encrypted notes first. It then decides which specific note needs attention, calling `get_item_details` to load the content for analysis. This sequence is perfect for complex reasoning chains where one step's output dictates the next action. You can build pipelines that analyze entire sets of notes before updating them using `update_note`.

Tagging and Organization Workflows

`create_tag` lets your agent establish a new category name on demand. Once the tag exists, it uses `tag_note`, requiring both the new tag's UUID and the target note’s UUID to link them up. This supports structured workflows where the agent first defines criteria (the tag) and then applies that structure across multiple notes automatically.

Syncing Data for Agents

`sync_items` runs the core Standard Notes sync operation, accepting a `sync_token`. This ensures your multi-agent setup is always working with the latest data available on the server. It's critical for maintaining context across long-running chains. After syncing, you can reliably call `list_tags` to ensure all necessary metadata is present before proceeding.

Setup guide

Set up Standard Notes MCP in LangChain

Prerequisites

  • Python 3.10+ installed
  • langchain-mcp-adapters + langgraph packages
  • Active Vinkius subscription with a valid endpoint token
  1. 1

    Install dependencies

    Run pip install langchain-mcp-adapters langgraph langchain-openai. The MCP adapters package converts MCP tools into native LangChain BaseTool objects.

  2. 2

    Connect via HTTP transport

    Use MultiServerMCPClient with "transport": "http" pointing to your Vinkius endpoint. Replace [YOUR_TOKEN_HERE] with your token from cloud.vinkius.com.

  3. 3

    Create a ReAct agent

    Pass the discovered tools to create_react_agent() from LangGraph. The agent automatically routes Standard Notes tool calls through the MCP protocol.

  4. 4

    Run with any LLM

    Swap ChatOpenAI for ChatAnthropic, ChatGoogleGenerativeAI, or any LangChain-compatible model. The MCP tools work identically across all providers.

agent.py
from langchain_mcp_adapters.client import MultiServerMCPClient
from langgraph.prebuilt import create_react_agent
from langchain_openai import ChatOpenAI

async with MultiServerMCPClient({
    "standard-notes-mcp": {
        "transport": "http",
        "url": "https://edge.vinkius.com/[YOUR_TOKEN_HERE]/mcp",
    }
}) as client:
    tools = client.get_tools()

    agent = create_react_agent(
        ChatOpenAI(model="gpt-4o"),
        tools,
    )
    result = await agent.ainvoke({
        "messages": "List recent Standard Notes transactions"
    })
    print(result["messages"][-1].content)

Common questions about Standard Notes MCP in LangChain

Your agent first uses `list_notes` to get a list of note IDs. It then passes those IDs to `get_item_details`, allowing the chain to inspect content and find what you need.
Yeah, you can. Call `create_tag` to make a new tag name. After that, use `tag_note` by providing both the UUID of the note and the newly created tag’s UUID.
The `delete_item` tool lets your agent remove anything—notes, tags, or extensions—by its UUID. Just remember this action is irreversible, so double-check the target item first.
The server handles all encryption internally; your agent doesn't touch the keys. The sensitive data type is the note content, and it remains encrypted until viewed by your client.
You can kick things off with `create_note`, providing a title and plain text. The sync layer handles the encryption automatically, so you just focus on writing the content.
