Key Capabilities

Creating and Modifying Content

The `create_note` tool handles building a new encrypted note; you just provide the plain text title and body. The underlying sync layer manages the encryption process for you. Agents can modify notes using `update_note`. This function requires the UUID of the target content, ensuring your agent changes only what it's supposed to.

Accessing Item Context via MCP Server

Need deep context on a specific item? Use `get_item_details` with any UUID—it works for notes, tags, or extensions. This gives your agent all the data it needs to make an informed decision. Furthermore, `list_notes` retrieves a list of every encrypted note in Standard Notes, letting your agent know what's out there.

Structuring Data with Tags

You can set up new categories using `create_tag`. To link content, the `tag_note` tool associates a tag UUID with a note UUID. It keeps your data clean and structured. The agent can also list all available tags via `list_tags`, which helps it build out proper relationships across the MCP Server.

Setup guide

Set up Standard Notes MCP in OpenAI Agents SDK

Prerequisites

  • Python 3.10+ installed
  • openai-agents package (pip install openai-agents)
  • Active Vinkius subscription with a valid endpoint token
  1. 1

    Install the SDK

    Run pip install openai-agents to install the OpenAI Agents SDK. The MCP integration is built-in — no extra dependencies needed.

  2. 2

    Connect via SSE transport

    Use MCPServerSse with your Vinkius endpoint URL. Replace [YOUR_TOKEN_HERE] with your token from cloud.vinkius.com. The SDK auto-discovers all Standard Notes tools at runtime.

  3. 3

    Create your Agent

    Pass the MCP to Agent(mcp_servers=[server]). The agent receives Standard Notes tools as native definitions — JSON schemas resolve automatically.

  4. 4

    Run the agent

    Call Runner.run(agent, prompt) to execute. The agent invokes the appropriate Standard Notes tools and returns structured results. Copy the full example on the right to get started.

agent.py
import asyncio
from agents import Agent, Runner
from agents.mcp import MCPServerSse

async def main():
    async with MCPServerSse(
        url="https://edge.vinkius.com/[YOUR_TOKEN_HERE]/mcp"
    ) as server:
        agent = Agent(
            name="Standard Notes Agent",
            instructions="You have access to Standard Notes tools.",
            mcp_servers=[server],
        )
        result = await Runner.run(agent, "List recent transactions")
        print(result.final_output)

asyncio.run(main())

Common questions about Standard Notes MCP in OpenAI Agents SDK

The system works by keeping notes encrypted until they are decrypted by your client. The agent interacts only with plaintext inputs/outputs, never handling the raw keys.
Yes. You use `create_tag` to define a new tag. Then, you must use `tag_note`, passing both the tag UUID and the note's UUID to make the connection.
You call `list_notes`. This function gives your agent a comprehensive overview of every encrypted note available in the account. The content itself remains secured.
Use `sync_items` along with the appropriate sync token. This performs the full, necessary synchronization operation, making sure your local copy is accurate.
This server interacts with notes, tags, and extensions. You can get item details using `get_item_details`, which requires a specific UUID to pull the context.
