Manage ZeroTier Networks with the MCP Server

This dedicated MCP Server exposes tools that let your agent fully control complex virtual networks. You can list all available central networks using `list_central_networks` or check local node health via `get_local_status`. This gives your production agent full visibility into its networking environment. The server doesn't just read data; it writes to it. Your AI client uses tools like `update_central_network_member` to authorize new peers or configure existing ones, making the agent an active network administrator.

Authorize Members in ZeroTier Networks

The server gives you granular control over who's on the wire. When your agent needs to onboard a new machine, it executes `update_controller_network_member`. This tool handles authorization and configuration for managed networks. Need to know who’s connected? Your client runs `list_central_network_members` to pull a list of all current peers on a specified ZeroTier Central network. It's perfect for audit logging within your agent's workflow.

Monitor Local Node Status via MCP Server

Building resilient agents requires knowing the state of the machine they run on. Use `get_local_status` to get real-time details about the local ZeroTier node. This check is crucial for ensuring network connectivity before an agent attempts a core task. If your agent needs to move or change networks, it can use `join_local_network`. Conversely, if the job is done and the connection isn't needed, `leave_local_network` cleanly disengages the node.

Setup guide

Set up ZeroTier MCP in OpenAI Agents SDK

Prerequisites

  • Python 3.10+ installed
  • openai-agents package (pip install openai-agents)
  • Active Vinkius subscription with a valid endpoint token
  1. 1

    Install the SDK

    Run pip install openai-agents to install the OpenAI Agents SDK. The MCP integration is built-in — no extra dependencies needed.

  2. 2

    Connect via SSE transport

    Use MCPServerSse with your Vinkius endpoint URL. Replace [YOUR_TOKEN_HERE] with your token from cloud.vinkius.com. The SDK auto-discovers all ZeroTier tools at runtime.

  3. 3

    Create your Agent

    Pass the MCP to Agent(mcp_servers=[server]). The agent receives ZeroTier tools as native definitions — JSON schemas resolve automatically.

  4. 4

    Run the agent

    Call Runner.run(agent, prompt) to execute. The agent invokes the appropriate ZeroTier tools and returns structured results. Copy the full example on the right to get started.

agent.py
import asyncio
from agents import Agent, Runner
from agents.mcp import MCPServerSse

async def main():
    async with MCPServerSse(
        url="https://edge.vinkius.com/[YOUR_TOKEN_HERE]/mcp"
    ) as server:
        agent = Agent(
            name="ZeroTier Agent",
            instructions="You have access to ZeroTier tools.",
            mcp_servers=[server],
        )
        result = await Runner.run(agent, "List recent transactions")
        print(result.final_output)

asyncio.run(main())

Common questions about ZeroTier MCP in OpenAI Agents SDK

The MCP Server exposes network management tools directly to your agent's toolset. This means your Python code doesn't need external calls; the specialized network functions are available right where your agent runs.
The server primarily manages Network IDs, Member lists, and Peer statuses. When you check membership, you're dealing with structured identifiers for both the network group and the machine itself.
Absolutely. Because of its direct tool exposure, your agent can perform networking setup steps—like joining or updating members—as part of an automated deployment routine using the MCP Server.
Yes. The server runs within Vinkius's isolated sandbox, and your agent interacts with it via controlled, defined tool endpoints, keeping operations separated from the core LLM process.
The `get_local_status` tool will report the current connection status. Your agent can read this state and implement retry logic or fail gracefully, ensuring reliable execution.
