Compatible with every major AI agent and IDE
What is the Azure Synapse Analytics MCP Server?
Connect your Azure Synapse workspace to any AI agent and take full control of your enterprise analytics workflows and data integration limits through natural conversation.
What you can do
- Compute Pools — Monitor currently provisioned infrastructure, ranging from Serverless/Dedicated SQL Pools to your active Apache Spark analytic clusters
- Integration Pipelines — Dissect data movement workflows (ETL/ELT), viewing precise activity target parameters and logical steps for a single tracked job
- Notebooks — Explore global Apache Spark analytics notebooks stored in the workspace mapped limits
- Datasets & Schemas — Audit specifically defined storage mappings shaping static or dynamic structures natively inside the limits
- Linked Services — Safely extract dependencies indicating external mappings referencing Key Vaults, Blob Storages, or other crucial endpoints
How it works
- Subscribe to this server
- Provide your Azure Synapse Workspace URL and an active Access Token
- Start dispatching complex analytics queries or debugging pipeline health from Claude, Cursor, or any MCP-compatible client
Who is this for?
- Data Engineers — trace failed pipelines and dissect linked service misconfigurations seamlessly without bouncing back to the Azure portal
- Data Scientists — survey available Spark Notebooks and retrieve dataset bounds quickly to evaluate variables right in the AI IDE
- Cloud Ops — remotely inspect compute scale thresholds (SQL/Spark pools) answering billing and scaling architecture queries on-demand

Why Cursor?
Cursor's Agent mode turns Azure Synapse Analytics into an in-editor superpower. Ask Cursor to generate code using live data from Azure Synapse Analytics and it fetches, processes, and writes. all in a single agentic loop. 7 tools appear alongside file editing and terminal access, creating a unified development environment grounded in real-time information.
- —
Agent mode turns Cursor into an autonomous coding assistant that can read files, run commands, and call MCP tools without switching context
- —
Cursor's Composer feature can generate entire files using real-time data fetched through MCP. no copy-pasting from external dashboards
- —
MCP tools appear alongside built-in tools like file reading and terminal access, creating a unified agentic environment
- —
VS Code extension compatibility means your existing workflow, keybindings, and extensions all work alongside MCP tools

Frequently asked questions
Can I audit completely isolated Spark clusters running heavy tasks?
Yes. Ask the agent to pull your active or paused list_spark_pools. It exposes pre-provisioned engine nodes along with boundaries explicitly defining core-node dimensions for analytic scaling operations.
Can my AI pinpoint the exact failing task inside an ETL pipeline?
Using the specific get_pipeline action equipped with the exact target name, the agent unfolds the raw underlying JSON orchestration topology. You can trace its target execution mappings, identifying incorrectly bounded inputs right on your prompt window.
Is it possible to diagnose broken connectivity to external Azure services?
Yes! The agent can invoke the built-in Linked Services inspector. This extracts all distinct dependencies attached to your current scope, such as mapping paths to a lost Key Vault or orphaned CosmosDB. Finding blind spots has never been faster.
What is Agent mode and why does it matter for MCP?
Agent mode is Cursor's autonomous execution mode where the AI can perform multi-step tasks: reading files, editing code, running terminal commands, and calling MCP tools. Without Agent mode, Cursor operates in a simpler ask-and-answer mode that doesn't support tool calling. Always ensure you're in Agent mode when working with MCP servers.
Where does Cursor store MCP configuration?
Cursor looks for MCP server configurations in a mcp.json file. You can configure servers at the project level (.cursor/mcp.json in your project root) or globally (~/.cursor/mcp.json). Project-level configs take precedence.
Can Cursor use MCP tools in inline edits?
No. MCP tools are only available in Agent mode through the chat panel. Inline completions and Tab suggestions do not trigger MCP tool calls. This is by design. tool calls require user visibility and approval.
How do I verify MCP tools are loaded?
Open Settings → Features → MCP and look for your server name. A green indicator means the server is connected. You can also check Agent mode's available tools by clicking the tools dropdown in the chat panel.
Tools not appearing in Cursor
Ensure you are in Agent mode (not Ask mode). MCP tools only work in Agent mode.
