What is the Databricks MCP Server?

Connect your Databricks workspace to any AI agent and take full control of your data intelligence platform and lakehouse orchestration through natural conversation.

What you can do

  • Cluster Monitoring — List all compute nodes and retrieve detailed information for specific clusters to audit health and capacity limits
  • Job Orchestration — List all configured workflows and jobs, and monitor recent executions to verify data pipeline statuses
  • SQL Warehouse Management — Enumerate explicitly configured SQL Serverless warehouses and track their active operational boundaries
  • Unity Catalog Exploration — List root catalogs and detailed schemas/databases to identify exactly where your structured data resides
  • Identity Oversight — Fetch profile information for the authenticated user or service principal to verify active workspace permissions
  • Run Auditing — Retrieve chronological logs of job runs to identify precise points of failure in your complex data workflows

How it works

  1. Subscribe to this server
  2. Enter your Databricks Host URL and Personal Access Token (PAT)
  3. Start managing your lakehouse from Claude, Cursor, or any MCP-compatible client

Who is this for?

  • Data Engineers — monitor job runs and cluster health without leaving the development environment
  • Analytics Engineers — explore Unity Catalog schemas and verify SQL warehouse availability in real-time
  • Data Platform Teams — audit workspace resources and monitor active service principal identities
  • MLOps Engineers — track model training jobs and verify compute cluster configurations through natural language

Why Cursor?

Cursor's Agent mode turns Databricks into an in-editor superpower. Ask Cursor to generate code using live data from Databricks and it fetches, processes, and writes. all in a single agentic loop. 8 tools appear alongside file editing and terminal access, creating a unified development environment grounded in real-time information.

  • Agent mode turns Cursor into an autonomous coding assistant that can read files, run commands, and call MCP tools without switching context

  • Cursor's Composer feature can generate entire files using real-time data fetched through MCP. no copy-pasting from external dashboards

  • MCP tools appear alongside built-in tools like file reading and terminal access, creating a unified agentic environment

  • VS Code extension compatibility means your existing workflow, keybindings, and extensions all work alongside MCP tools

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

01

Can my agent check the status of a specific Databricks job run?

Yes. Provide the 'job_id' to the 'list_job_runs' tool. The agent will retrieve the chronological history of executions, allowing you to identify successful completions or precise points of failure in your workflows.

02

How do I explore schemas within a specific Unity Catalog via chat?

Use the 'list_schemas' tool and provide the catalog name. Your agent will pull the detailed databases and schemas registered inside that Unity Catalog, giving you immediate visibility into your data hierarchy.

03

Can I monitor the health of my Databricks clusters through the agent?

Absolutely. The 'list_clusters' and 'get_cluster' tools allow your agent to retrieve detailed node information and operational statuses, helping you audit cluster health and capacity across your workspace.

04

What is Agent mode and why does it matter for MCP?

Agent mode is Cursor's autonomous execution mode where the AI can perform multi-step tasks: reading files, editing code, running terminal commands, and calling MCP tools. Without Agent mode, Cursor operates in a simpler ask-and-answer mode that doesn't support tool calling. Always ensure you're in Agent mode when working with MCP servers.

05

Where does Cursor store MCP configuration?

Cursor looks for MCP server configurations in a mcp.json file. You can configure servers at the project level (.cursor/mcp.json in your project root) or globally (~/.cursor/mcp.json). Project-level configs take precedence.

06

Can Cursor use MCP tools in inline edits?

No. MCP tools are only available in Agent mode through the chat panel. Inline completions and Tab suggestions do not trigger MCP tool calls. This is by design. tool calls require user visibility and approval.

07

How do I verify MCP tools are loaded?

Open Settings → Features → MCP and look for your server name. A green indicator means the server is connected. You can also check Agent mode's available tools by clicking the tools dropdown in the chat panel.

08

Tools not appearing in Cursor

Ensure you are in Agent mode (not Ask mode). MCP tools only work in Agent mode.
