What is the Google Air Quality MCP Server?
Equip your AI agent with hyper-local environmental intelligence through the Google Air Quality MCP server. This integration provides real-time access to accurate air quality indexes, detailed pollutant concentrations, and actionable health recommendations for specific coordinates. Powered by Google's massive environmental data layer, your agent can retrieve the Universal Air Quality Index (UAQI), identify dominant pollutants (PM2.5, NO2, etc.), and access up to 30 days of historical data. Whether you are building health-tracking tools, planning outdoor events, or researching urban pollution, your agent acts as a dedicated environmental consultant through natural conversation.
What you can do
- Real-time AQI Lookup — Get the current Universal Air Quality Index for any latitude/longitude.
- Pollutant Breakdown — Identify dominant pollutants and their concentrations in specific areas.
- Historical Auditing — Retrieve up to 720 hours of historical air quality data for trend analysis.
- Health Advice — Access tailored recommendations for children, elderly, and sensitive groups.
How it works
- Subscribe to this server
- Enter your Google Maps API Key (ensure Air Quality API is enabled)
- Start monitoring air quality from Claude, Cursor, or any MCP-compatible client
Who is this for?
- Health-conscious Users — monitor local conditions to protect themselves and their families.
- Event Organizers — verify air quality for outdoor festivals, sports, and gatherings.
- Real Estate Professionals — provide environmental insights for specific property locations.
- Sustainability Researchers — track urban air quality trends using Google's precise data.

Why Cursor?
Cursor's Agent mode turns Google Air Quality into an in-editor superpower. Ask Cursor to generate code using live data from Google Air Quality and it fetches, processes, and writes. all in a single agentic loop. 2 tools appear alongside file editing and terminal access, creating a unified development environment grounded in real-time information.
- —
Agent mode turns Cursor into an autonomous coding assistant that can read files, run commands, and call MCP tools without switching context
- —
Cursor's Composer feature can generate entire files using real-time data fetched through MCP. no copy-pasting from external dashboards
- —
MCP tools appear alongside built-in tools like file reading and terminal access, creating a unified agentic environment
- —
VS Code extension compatibility means your existing workflow, keybindings, and extensions all work alongside MCP tools

Frequently asked questions
What is the Universal Air Quality Index (UAQI)?
The UAQI is Google's proprietary index that normalizes air quality measurements globally. It ranges from 0 to 100, where 100 is excellent and 0 is poor.
Can I check historical air quality for the past week?
Yes. The get_air_quality_history tool allows you to retrieve up to 720 hours (30 days) of historical data for any coordinate.
Are there specific advice for outdoor sports?
Yes. The health recommendations provide specific guidance for athletes and individuals performing intense physical activities outdoors based on the pollutant levels.
What is Agent mode and why does it matter for MCP?
Agent mode is Cursor's autonomous execution mode where the AI can perform multi-step tasks: reading files, editing code, running terminal commands, and calling MCP tools. Without Agent mode, Cursor operates in a simpler ask-and-answer mode that doesn't support tool calling. Always ensure you're in Agent mode when working with MCP servers.
Where does Cursor store MCP configuration?
Cursor looks for MCP server configurations in a mcp.json file. You can configure servers at the project level (.cursor/mcp.json in your project root) or globally (~/.cursor/mcp.json). Project-level configs take precedence.
Can Cursor use MCP tools in inline edits?
No. MCP tools are only available in Agent mode through the chat panel. Inline completions and Tab suggestions do not trigger MCP tool calls. This is by design. tool calls require user visibility and approval.
How do I verify MCP tools are loaded?
Open Settings → Features → MCP and look for your server name. A green indicator means the server is connected. You can also check Agent mode's available tools by clicking the tools dropdown in the chat panel.
Tools not appearing in Cursor
Ensure you are in Agent mode (not Ask mode). MCP tools only work in Agent mode.
