NREL Energy Data

What is the NREL Energy Data MCP Server?

Connect to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) API through your AI agent and explore a vast archive of sustainable energy data and analysis tools using natural conversation.

What you can do

  • Alternative Fuels — List and locate alternative fuel stations (Electric, Hydrogen, E85) globally, or find the nearest one to any address.
  • Solar Production — Run PVWatts® estimates to calculate the potential energy production of photovoltaic systems based on specific system configurations.
  • Resource Intelligence — Access detailed solar radiation data (GHI, DNI) and check geothermal resource potential for any coordinate.
  • Utility Oversight — Retrieve residential and industrial electricity rates and identify which utility companies serve a specific area.
  • Incentives & Laws — Browse federal and state laws and incentives for alternative fuels and energy-efficient vehicles.
  • Deep Inspection — Fetch complete metadata and station details using their unique IDs.

How it works

  1. Subscribe to this server
  2. Enter your NREL Developer API Key (get one for free at developer.nrel.gov/signup)
  3. Start exploring renewable energy data from Claude, Cursor, or any MCP client

Who is this for?

  • Sustainability Researchers — quickly retrieve solar and geothermal resource data for environmental analysis.
  • EV & Fleet Managers — locate charging infrastructure and alternative fuel stations along routes.
  • Energy Consultants — automate the retrieval of utility rates and solar production estimates for client reporting.

Why Cursor?

Cursor's Agent mode turns NREL Energy Data into an in-editor superpower. Ask Cursor to generate code using live data from NREL Energy Data and it fetches, processes, and writes. all in a single agentic loop. 10 tools appear alongside file editing and terminal access, creating a unified development environment grounded in real-time information.

  • Agent mode turns Cursor into an autonomous coding assistant that can read files, run commands, and call MCP tools without switching context

  • Cursor's Composer feature can generate entire files using real-time data fetched through MCP. no copy-pasting from external dashboards

  • MCP tools appear alongside built-in tools like file reading and terminal access, creating a unified agentic environment

  • VS Code extension compatibility means your existing workflow, keybindings, and extensions all work alongside MCP tools

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

01

Is the NREL API Key free?

Yes! You can sign up for a free API key at https://developer.nrel.gov/signup/. Standard limits apply (1,000 requests per hour).

02

What is PVWatts used for?

PVWatts estimates the energy production and cost of energy of grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) energy systems throughout the world.

03

Can I search for EV charging stations?

Yes! EV charging stations are included in the Alternative Fuel Stations dataset. Use the get_nearest_stations tool to find them near a specific location.

04

What is Agent mode and why does it matter for MCP?

Agent mode is Cursor's autonomous execution mode where the AI can perform multi-step tasks: reading files, editing code, running terminal commands, and calling MCP tools. Without Agent mode, Cursor operates in a simpler ask-and-answer mode that doesn't support tool calling. Always ensure you're in Agent mode when working with MCP servers.

05

Where does Cursor store MCP configuration?

Cursor looks for MCP server configurations in a mcp.json file. You can configure servers at the project level (.cursor/mcp.json in your project root) or globally (~/.cursor/mcp.json). Project-level configs take precedence.

06

Can Cursor use MCP tools in inline edits?

No. MCP tools are only available in Agent mode through the chat panel. Inline completions and Tab suggestions do not trigger MCP tool calls. This is by design. tool calls require user visibility and approval.

07

How do I verify MCP tools are loaded?

Open Settings → Features → MCP and look for your server name. A green indicator means the server is connected. You can also check Agent mode's available tools by clicking the tools dropdown in the chat panel.

08

Tools not appearing in Cursor

Ensure you are in Agent mode (not Ask mode). MCP tools only work in Agent mode.

09

Server shows as disconnected

Check Settings → Features → MCP and verify the server status. Try clicking the refresh button.
