WHO Athena API

What is the WHO Athena API MCP Server?

Empower your AI agent to orchestrate your entire public health research and policy auditing workflow with the WHO Athena API, the authoritative source for global health indicators from the World Health Organization. By connecting the WHO GHO service to your agent, you transform complex medical searches into a natural conversation. Your agent can instantly retrieve historical datasets, audit regional health trends, and query specific indicator codes without you ever touching a health portal. Whether you are conducting epidemiological research or managing regional policy constraints, your agent acts as a real-time health analyst, ensuring your intelligence is always verified and precise.

What you can do

  • Indicator Auditing — Retrieve high-resolution statistical data for thousands of WHO health identifiers and maintain a clear view of global health changes.
  • Trend Oversight — Audit historical health statistics to understand the longitudinal distribution of medical scale instantly.
  • Dimension Discovery — Browse all available observation dimensions like 'country' or 'year' to maintain strict organizational control over your research.
  • Medical Intelligence — Retrieve unique indicator codes and observation metadata to assist in deep-dive archival classification.
  • Operational Monitoring — Check API status to ensure your health research workflow is always operational.

How it works

  1. Subscribe to this server
  2. No API Key required (WHO GHO API is a free and open service)
  3. Start managing your health intelligence through Claude, Cursor, or any MCP-compatible client

Who is this for?

  • Health Analysts & Policy Makers — monitor global trends and retrieve official metadata straight from your workflow.
  • Epidemiologists & Researchers — verify statistical data and audit series patterns without manual searching.
  • Medical Journalists — perform rapid audits of regional indicators and identify relevant health patterns through natural language.
  • Operations Leads — automate health data querying to orchestrate cross-functional research teams smoothly.

Why Cursor?

Cursor's Agent mode turns WHO Athena API into an in-editor superpower. Ask Cursor to generate code using live data from WHO Athena API and it fetches, processes, and writes. all in a single agentic loop. 4 tools appear alongside file editing and terminal access, creating a unified development environment grounded in real-time information.

  • Agent mode turns Cursor into an autonomous coding assistant that can read files, run commands, and call MCP tools without switching context

  • Cursor's Composer feature can generate entire files using real-time data fetched through MCP. no copy-pasting from external dashboards

  • MCP tools appear alongside built-in tools like file reading and terminal access, creating a unified agentic environment

  • VS Code extension compatibility means your existing workflow, keybindings, and extensions all work alongside MCP tools

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

01

Is an API Key required for WHO Athena API?

No. The WHO Global Health Observatory API is a free and open service. This server works out of the box without any static credentials required.

02

What format is the data returned in?

The API returns detailed health indicator data including numeric values, spatial dimensions (countries), and time dimensions (years).

03

Can I filter by indicator code?

Yes. Use the get_health_indicator_data tool and provide the WHO indicator code (e.g., 'WHOSIS_000001' for life expectancy).

04

What is Agent mode and why does it matter for MCP?

Agent mode is Cursor's autonomous execution mode where the AI can perform multi-step tasks: reading files, editing code, running terminal commands, and calling MCP tools. Without Agent mode, Cursor operates in a simpler ask-and-answer mode that doesn't support tool calling. Always ensure you're in Agent mode when working with MCP servers.

05

Where does Cursor store MCP configuration?

Cursor looks for MCP server configurations in a mcp.json file. You can configure servers at the project level (.cursor/mcp.json in your project root) or globally (~/.cursor/mcp.json). Project-level configs take precedence.

06

Can Cursor use MCP tools in inline edits?

No. MCP tools are only available in Agent mode through the chat panel. Inline completions and Tab suggestions do not trigger MCP tool calls. This is by design. tool calls require user visibility and approval.

07

How do I verify MCP tools are loaded?

Open Settings → Features → MCP and look for your server name. A green indicator means the server is connected. You can also check Agent mode's available tools by clicking the tools dropdown in the chat panel.

08

Tools not appearing in Cursor

Ensure you are in Agent mode (not Ask mode). MCP tools only work in Agent mode.

09
