What is the SparkPost MCP Server?

Connect your SparkPost ecosystem natively to your artificial intelligence assistant. Streamline communication workflows by triggering email sending scripts or auditing delivery matrices natively within your code editor. Bypass the need to log into the SparkPost Web UI repeatedly; create intricate newsletter templates using an LLM to generate perfectly formatted HTML arrays and push them dynamically to your SparkPost instance.

What you can do

  • Transmission Hub — Use send_email to test transactions instantly via standard human prompts
  • Template Factory — Design and register valid HTML layouts via create_template, pulling down raw markup utilizing get_template_details
  • Health Monitoring — Retrieve operational KPIs executing get_deliverability_metrics, while simultaneously listing real-time failures by issuing list_bounce_events
  • Compliance & Suppressions — Read exactly who hit the spam or unsubscribe button by commanding list_suppression_list and unblocking falsely filtered individuals locally via delete_suppression_record

How it works

  1. Subscribe to this AI integration server
  2. Provide your overarching SparkPost API Key
  3. Engage your language model internally querying about your specific active mailing webhooks

Stop managing HTML string templates manually or debugging mail senders manually in isolated Postman queries. Let the AI understand your Email API context intuitively.

Who is this for?

  • Developer / Ops — test transactional emails immediately while scripting local applications without interrupting your workflow
  • Marketing Engineers — command the bot to parse old templates and refactor HTML layouts directly injecting modernized structures
  • Postmaster Administrators — audit sudden drops in global metric performance, asking LLMs to filter Bounce Events systematically

Why VS Code Copilot?

GitHub Copilot Agent mode brings SparkPost data directly into your VS Code workflow. With a project-scoped config, the entire team shares access to 10 tools. Copilot queries live data, generates typed code, and writes tests from actual API responses, all without leaving the editor.

  • VS Code is used by over 70% of developers. adding MCP tools to Copilot means your team can leverage external data without leaving their primary editor

  • Project-scoped MCP configs (.vscode/mcp.json) let you commit server configurations to your repository, ensuring the entire team shares the same tool access

  • Copilot's Agent mode integrates MCP tools seamlessly with file editing, terminal commands, and workspace search in a single agentic loop

  • GitHub's enterprise compliance and audit features extend to MCP tool usage, providing visibility into how AI interacts with external services

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

01

Can the AI rewrite an old HTML email template and import it straight into SparkPost?

Yes! The bot reads your existing content using get_template_details, uses its intelligence to fully redesign the HTML block recursively (e.g. updating tables to modern styling natively), and finally invokes create_template to overwrite or deploy the modernized file safely to the cloud.

02

How easy is it to send a test email from the IDE without a UI interface?

It takes one sentence. You can type: 'Send via SparkPost a test email to admin@test.com titled Server OK'. The LLM gathers the keys, utilizes send_email, structures the JSON transmission array natively, and confirms back to you upon a 2xx HTTP delivery success.

03

Can it search for specifically why emails are bouncing from a certain provider?

Yes. While the list_bounce_events gets the core list, prompting the LLM to 'diagnose our latest bounces' lets the AI digest all textual rejection codes (e.g., SMTP 550 spam blocks vs 421 rate limits) and present a structured summary of where and why deliverability is faltering.

04

Which VS Code version supports MCP?

MCP support requires VS Code 1.99 or later with the GitHub Copilot extension. Ensure both are updated to the latest version. Older versions of Copilot may not expose the Agent mode toggle.

05

How do I switch to Agent mode?

Open the Copilot Chat panel and look for two mode options: "Ask" and "Agent". Click "Agent" to enable autonomous tool calling. In Ask mode, Copilot provides conversational answers but cannot invoke MCP tools.

06

Can I restrict which MCP tools Copilot can access?

Yes. VS Code shows a tool consent dialog before any MCP tool is invoked for the first time. You can also configure tool access policies at the organization level through GitHub Copilot settings.

07

Does MCP work in VS Code Remote or Codespaces?

Yes. MCP servers configured via .vscode/mcp.json work in Remote SSH, WSL, and GitHub Codespaces environments. The MCP connection is established from the remote host, so ensure the server URL is accessible from that environment.

08

MCP tools not available

Ensure you are in Agent mode in Copilot Chat. MCP tools only appear in Agent mode.
