What is the NASA Open Data MCP Server?

Equip your AI agent with the wonders of the universe through the NASA Open Data MCP server. This integration provides real-time access to official NASA databases, including the Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD), high-resolution imagery from Mars Rovers (Curiosity, Opportunity, Spirit), and the Near Earth Object (NEO) feed for tracking asteroids. Whether you are an astronomy enthusiast, a space researcher, or an educator, your agent acts as a dedicated space science mission specialist through natural conversation.

What you can do

  • Astronomy Discovery — Retrieve the daily astronomy picture and its detailed scientific explanation.
  • Planetary Imaging — Access real-time photos from Mars and monitor Earth via the DSCOVR EPIC instrument.
  • Solar Weather Intelligence — Track Coronal Mass Ejections (CME) and Solar Flares from the Space Weather Database.
  • Asteroid Tracking — Monitor Near Earth Objects, track specific asteroids by ID, and review potential Earth impact risks.
  • Space Auditing — Summarize complex astronomical findings and historical space mission data.

How it works

  1. Subscribe to this server
  2. Enter your NASA API Key (get it at api.nasa.gov)
  3. Start exploring the cosmos from Claude, Cursor, or any MCP-compatible client

Who is this for?

  • Astronomy Enthusiasts — track daily cosmic events, solar flares, and Martian exploration.
  • Educators & Students — access reliable high-quality space data for learning and assignments.
  • Science Researchers — pull structured metadata for asteroids and planetary science.
  • Content Creators — source stunning official NASA imagery for various digital media.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

01

Can I see photos from the Curiosity rover?

Yes! Use the get_mars_rover_photos tool and set the rover parameter to 'curiosity'. You'll also need to provide a specific earth date.

02

How do I know if an asteroid is dangerous?

The get_near_earth_objects tool returns a list of asteroids. For each object, the is_potentially_hazardous_asteroid field will tell you if NASA has classified it as a potential threat.

03

Does this provide real-time space images?

The images are updated as soon as they are processed and published by NASA. For example, APOD is updated daily, and rover photos are uploaded as they are received from the Martian surface.

04

How does Claude Desktop discover MCP tools?

When Claude Desktop starts, it reads the claude_desktop_config.json file and connects to each configured MCP server. It calls the tools/list endpoint to fetch the schema for every available tool, then surfaces them as clickable options in the chat interface via the 🔌 icon.

05

What happens if the MCP server is temporarily unavailable?

Claude Desktop handles disconnections gracefully. if the server is unreachable at startup, the tools simply won't appear. Once the server becomes available again, restarting Claude Desktop will re-establish the connection. There is no timeout penalty or error loop.

06

Can I connect multiple MCP servers simultaneously?

Yes. You can add as many servers as you need in the mcpServers section of the config file. Each server appears as a separate tool provider, and Claude can use tools from multiple servers in a single conversation turn.

07

Is there a limit on the number of tools per server?

Claude Desktop can handle hundreds of tools per server. However, for optimal LLM performance, Vinkius servers are designed to expose focused, well-documented tool sets rather than overwhelming the model with too many options.

08

Does Claude Desktop support Streamable HTTP transport?

Yes. Claude Desktop supports both SSE (Server-Sent Events) and the newer Streamable HTTP transport that Vinkius uses. Simply provide the server URL. Claude auto-negotiates the transport protocol.

09

Server not appearing after restart

Ensure the JSON is valid (no trailing commas). Check the file path: ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json (macOS) or %APPDATA%\\Claude\\ (Windows).

10

Authentication error

Verify your Vinkius token is correct. Go to cloud.vinkius.com to regenerate it if needed.

11

Tools not showing in chat

Click the 🔌 icon at the bottom of the chat input. If it shows 0 tools, the server may still be connecting. wait a few seconds.
